I have one truck with a 10 and one with a 13. In top gear they both run 64 @ 1500 rpms. For fuel mileage that's the most important thing, rpms at cruising speed in top gear. I don't know what is optimal there, depends what speed you are generally going to run. I think I would get better mileage if I could run 64 @ 1350 or 1400.

The 13 is nice for small hills to just split down to 12 rather than shifting from 10 to 9. It's handy, but not a major factor for me.

you would think the lower rpm's would get better mileage. but it's the other way around.

higher rpms means more power. so the engine isn't working as hard to pull the load.

I've never put gas in my truck. Well, at least nothing that Tums and Rolaids wouldn't help with.

10 speed is so much more work for you and the engine. Engine brakes work better with 13/18 because you can keep the engine closer to 2000 RPM. With a 13 when the engine slows to 1600 you can grab another gear down, with a 10 you have to wait till 1300 to downshift.

I was thinking about this last night, when I was putting the 10 speed in 8th gear at 25 mph.

I like the engine transmission combination I have now, but I really do like a 9 speed better than a 10 because of the gear progression, you can actually have more spread and higher speed on the low side with a 9, than with a ten, and the 13/18 is a nine with the splitter added.

I started with 9 speeds and I don't think the 10 is as good from what I have seen in almost 10 years. An ag tractor is much the same way, having a better running engine tends to make up for less gears.

A good running engine is actually more important to me now than the number of gears.

13 Speed Hands Down! The 10 Speed Is Junk To Me. The Only Thing Worse Than A 10 IS A Super 10....Nasty!
A 13 Allows You To Stay In The Optimal RPM Range For The ConditioNs You Are In. This Means Optimal Engine Performance, Fuel Mileage, Engine BrAking, Etc.

On A Side Note, Why Is My Phone Capitalizing All These Letters? HaHaHa

Why dont you like the Super 10s? My aunt has one and loves it. I trained in a 9, then a 13, love the splitter. I havent had a chance to personally drive her super 10 yet, been waiting for her to get out of the office for a day and go drive, so I can go with her and try it out. She can not drive a 13 to save her life though.
