If you can get on at Landstar you have the option to work as much or as little as you like when you combine that with the ability to pick your own freight its really a great place for someone that wants to only work once in awhile.

thanks Desert_Skies - i have sent my paperwork over to them. one of the recruiters said that a lot of drivers that use landstar end up getting their own authority and continue working with l/s. i dont really want the hassle of my own authority. i havent heard back from them in a few weeks and no returned emails or calls. i read on here that they are very thorough and it may take a little while. so i might just need patience.

It can take some time, have you been over to the LS forum? As far as authority goes Im more than happy running under their authority. The extra headaches are not worth it to me at this point. There is plenty of good paying freight and you will make good money even on a part time basis.

I know a guy that though that but they let him go because he wasnt working enough

mudflap, if you don't hear back from landstar, give mercer a call. we are like the retirement community of trucking. I basically took off the whole summer and they didn't give me any grief for it

There must have been some other issues at work. The only thing I have heard is that if you pull a company van they may not want that eqipment sitting for weeks on end. Seems to me that most of the guys that work the least have thier own equipment.

I am a former Landstar driver and really liked it there. However, I just saw this company posted on another thread and it looks like you would have even more freedom then Landstar gives you, plus they pay 90% of the gross (83% if you lease one of their trailers) compared to Landstar paying about 65% unless you bring your own trailer. To be fair this company is a totally different animal then Landstar.

looks like you will be paying $117.43/week for insurance + $9.50 bobtail, and you will also be paying $100/week for the first three months startup costs. That's all in addition to the 10%. and you will be finding your own loads.
not unreasonable really for someone full time, but if you're running part time or want to take weeks off and still gotta pay $227/week and 10% of all loads might be tough to see any profit. -
Lol, ask them how much direct freight they have! In the meet the staff, there isn't one sales person, but plenty to receive rate confirmations and input them (broker freight). 90% of a load already missing 20% is no great deal.
