Well, I sold my truck and trailer 3 months ago and got a desk job. Needless to say after 3.5 years working for myself the shock of dealing with corporate BS has not been pleasant and I'm pretty sure my days are numbered as I can't seem to keep my common sense opinions to myself. Yes, I may be crazy but I am going to buy another truck and trailer and reactivate my authority.

I'm looking at 4 different trucks, I have hauled quite a bit of produce out of California in the past so I am looking at a CARB legal truck.

    2009 Cascadia DD15 455 hp 10 sp midroof - 432,000 miles - 2.62 rears; old PAM truck. Has a Fridgette APU

    2010 Cascadia DD15 455 hp 10 sp condo - 425,000 miles - 3.42 rears; old US xpress truck - no APU

    2011 Pete 384 Paccar 430 hp 10 sp - 154000 miles - 63" stand up sleeper 3.36 rears - no apu

    2010 Cascadia DD15 455 hp 13 sp - 510,000 miles - condo - 3.42 rears - no apu

Other than the Pete its about $30k more, the 3 Freightliners are all priced within a few thousand of each other. I will not buy a Volvo as our local dealer is a POS and their service dept was terrible to deal with. So what would be your opinion and why? I would love to buy a pre-emissions truck BUT I looked back and pulled several loads of produce out west that paid over $2.70 a mile and I don't want to restrict myself to staying out of Cali.

Well considering your options are 3 junk an 1 quality... Have you ever driven a freightshaker or detdoit? Really seriously they shake, break, less hill power, mpg not much diff then any one else... Oh and the interiors fall apart... Parts are cheap cause they junk an always in shop. There is nothing like the ride quality of a pete or kw.. These trucks handle great, ride smooth, interiors are quiet and they dont fall apart..... The new PACCAR engine is truely amazing and th eng brake us awsome! I have driven pete, kw, freight junk, volvo, internationl, detroit, cat, volvo, and paccar engines... I owned a freightshaker... I have owned a apu an driven tducks with them.... The ROI ishorrible and they are not reliable....IDLE SMART is the way to go.. Contact them...

That didn't take long LOL. There's been many hard times in the past two years where I considered doing what you've done and resisted. Easier money but at a substantial mental cost. Thanks for the update that office politics and BS haven't changed.

Is a DEF-equipped truck (2011+) out of the budget? Seems pretty common that they are the more reliable and less expensive to operate choice. Also, I wouldn't buy another truck without a 13 sp and an apu already on it. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. I've had to spend a little time and money freshening up a vintage tripak, but it's been well worth it versus the gen/portable a/c setup in my son's truck or not having one. The apu really didn't affect the purchase price my much, if any.

IMO California isn't worth the hassle. But you didn't ask me that, and you probably already have established business contacts there that I do not. So I do get the why.

Claw - yes, I had a 2007 Columbia with a Series 60. It wasn't flashy but it was reliable and I wish I still owned it. I owned (only drove a few times) a 2008 KW T660 and I thought it was a piece of junk. Leaked like a sieve in the rain, interior parts broken (just like FL) and so on. Personally I am sold on Detroit and super leery about "proprietary" engines like the Paccar MX from the truck manufacturer but it's good to hear that guys are happy with them. Plus Freightliner and Detroit are easier to get worked on if necessary with many places open 24/7.

Red - I should have known better than to sell in the first place but live and learn. I really want to get an SCR engine for the fuel mileage but the price on 2011 or newer used trucks are ridiculous. I may just go with an older / cheaper truck and abandon Cali. I'm scared to death of the dreaded 08-10 DPF engines reliability and fuel mileage.

You want to make money or look good? If I had it to do all over again I would get a cheap company 2003 or older freightliner with a Series 60 detroit might even think about a old cabover. Theres a reason JB, Snidner and a lot of the big companies buy Freightliners they dont care about what the so called big boys think its about making money

Nothing wrong with Detroits, or Freightliners if they float yer boat.
I wouldn't pick any of those trucks myself, especially one with a Paccar motor.
