We are moving to Austin in the next few weeks. My husband will be searching for CDL work in the oil & gas industry. I would prefer to stay in the North Austin area for my daughters preschool and while I finish school, but it seems that there may not be any nearby places for my husband to work and be home daily.
He is currently looking south of San Antonio and near San Angelo and will have to get separate housing if that's where he finds work.
Does anyone know of any companies that are closer to Austin for oil & gas (looking for that OT)? He also welds (MIG) and was a mechanic (auto), has hazmat and tanker, and two-year technical degree in computer networking/web programming. I'm curious if there are any particular jobs he may be well suited for that could use his other skills in addition to being a driver. I've been researching as much as possible on the internet, but asking people in the "know" usually returns better results!
Thanks in advance for any information!

I know that there are companies hiring drivers around the San Antonio and San Angelo area. I don't know of any closer to Austin. Those that I have heard about are also around Odessa and Ft. Worth areas. None are any closer to Austin than the jobs around San Antonio. You might check with the state employment office. Many companies list their jobs with them. I would also check those oil companies to see if there is something that might be closer to you.

I will warn you that the Austin area under pay for skilled labor (welder, mechanic, etc), so I hope you, as a family, do not have to endure much separation. I take it you have young children since you mentioned day care. South Austin has many great areas and service, so there is no need to limit yourself geographically, unless your schooling will take place north and the convenience is that great an issue. Good luck. -
Thank you G/Man and Greywolfe.
I found the Texas employment office a few months back, but have forgotten about it--thanks for the reminder! I'll save it in my favorites to check often.
Giddings looks the closet to Round Rock, which is the area the preschool is in. We are transferring from a Bright Horizons in NC to the new one in RR. I would love to stay there, but depending on the opportunity, am open to other places as long as I can find the right fit for preschool. I like the idea that my school, WGU, has a presence in Austin as well. He would love to start in a tech position, but figured starting with driving is a good way in and will allow him to work his way up in the oil & gas industry. He is looking for a long-term career where he can continue his education and learn more about the oil & gas industry. Matter of fact, once I finish my BS in Information Technology, I would be interested in the oil & gas industry as well.
Thanks for the warning--part of the reason we went back to school was to get away from skilled labor. The wages have gone down in our area as well. We team drove for a small amount of time in '08, but fuel prices skyrocketed and we were not getting the miles needed to sustain living on the road and maintaining our home in NC. It's been a rough 5-years, but we are hoping that'll change!
Any other insight is welcome!!!

woodfired : When we bought out home in Nevada this year, we used Redfin and City-data websites. With Redfin, whether renting or buying, you can match homes to schools. Each home, rental or purchase, will give information on the schools for that home. We spent hours on those websites to find the best schools, then match a home to the schools.

I used to live in Austin and the tech industry is big there. I for one used to work at applied materials which is s a semiconductor equipment manufacturing company. The techs there make anywhere from 18-35 hr. Just depends on experience. May have to start as a temp but he can make good money. Oh yea they usually work alot of ot. Just depends on the department.

Most oilfield jobs in that area are gonna circle around San Antonio but closer to you will be areas of Segguin, Gonzales Cuero. They are not close but not far. It is not a daily commute and I would advise your husband to look specifically for jobs with housing so that he can stay there while working. At my husbands company he has several co-workers who live in Austin and just go back on days off. If you were willing to move more bottom south or even in between it can be doable but to be by RR it will be brutal for him to commute daily after working long hours. Good luck, I liked Austin when moved here but grew more attached to San Antonio.

Just a few more days--I am so excited to get there! Haven't been a fairly long drive since trucking, so I'm looking forward to the scenery. Wondering how many times a 3-year old can ask "Are we there yet"?
