Well it's our first year running, finally yesterday made our way to Salinas, Cali with the nice skirts and an ARB# on the reefer thinking we finally made it to the greener pastures only to have 3 brokers cancel on us after we sent in the contract!! Thinking it was bad luck waited till today only to see rates that were at $7400 (Salinas to NY) go to $6000... to no loads at all! WTF happened for the whole market to crash like this in one day?? What did i miss? Newbies still trying to learn
Is cali dead for reefers?

Just a bad day. What is the weather like out that way. Did it rain to stop them picking all kind of things can make it change .That is the problem heading to areas trying to hit the big paying loads. Everyone else has the same idea which brings a big drop in price when the area gets flooded with trucks.
FLATBED Thanks this. -
fat bed rate isn't good at all.

I make it decent in co.

There are good $ rates on all freight but you need to realize it takes time to get established with a good reputation and not have to live off loadboards and the fluctuating rates for reasons such as Davee listed.

Check C.H. Robinson website. When I pulled reefer they always took good care of us coming out of California or Florida. Only sat one time in CA; terminal manager found out the load planner turned down C.H. Robinson loads because he was offered kickbacks from some sleeze broker. Never sat in CA with flatbed; always had lumber loads waiting heading to the East Coast.

Couldn't get anything OUT of cali over $2/mile All the loads were spoken for before i even got through. Many lines came back with busy signal or a message that lines were over loaded. When i asked for anything over $2 FROM cali was told by brokers that they have dozens of trucks on hold waiting to take it under $2 loads were taken off few minutes after they were posted assuming cause brokers couldn't deal with all the calls. Never seen anything like that.

I dont know been running hard as fast as i can turn them rounds. Better off getting setup before with a good produce broker they will take care of there regular trucks before someone they dont know. And why is it them skateboaders always bragging about not hauling produce yet always see them hauling it hmmm. I thought they have there big dollar freight and didnt need to mess with warehouses and such.
FLATBED Thanks this. -
I think produce season is about over, isn't it? So of course there's going to be a big surplus...I think the big thing right now is peppers and pickles, I think, not sure, though. In the Great Lakes region it's still pretty good. You can get a load to Florida for close to $3.50/mi from what I've heard from a guy that runs 8 reefer units. I almost started working for him recently but decided to go back doing automotive parts to Laredo.
