I have a B license and have been hauling extruded aluminum in Southern California for 10 years and recently found out my job is going to be changed to 30 hours after the first of the year. I have about decided to go to the Dootson school in Arcadia Ca, I have heard from some of the local drivers I know that the school is pretty good and it is just 20 minutes away so I can go on weekends and still work. The ideal situation for me would be to get on with one of the larger aluminum companies on the area that run trucks with soft sided trailers. I know the ideal doesn't always work out so my back up would be tankers. I am loving the amount of info on this site and the number of questions I can find the answers to just by looking.

    Welcome APCP!
I also had a B license for over 30 years, driving straight dump rucks, straight flatbeds, up to driving concrete mixers. Moving up to the Class A is by far a smart move!
If the trucking school has good "word of mouth" reputation, that speaks volumes, as compared to fancy brochures.
New Class A grads usually have to endure 1-2 years of "less than optimal" trucking company experience before the "field" really opens up. Just in general, not in every single case, tho.
Hope you can get a better slot with the local companies you mentioned. But most require 2 yrs Class A experience for insurance reasons.

Thanks for the encouragement, I am hoping to get lucky in regards to a job. I have been talking to some of the guys who drive class A in our industry and a number of them have said they would be more than happy to speak to their employers about me, I hope plugging along and doing my job well will pay off.
