I know it is hard for new drivers to get on doing local but what about regional?

You can get local or regional; just depends on what's available when you start applying. Monitor the Careerbuilder and Indeed websites.

I'm starting my first job this week, regional only company. I wanted to go OTR, lol! Just be warned, that when regional positions for the big carriers tell you home every/most weekends, they likely mean for your 34 hour reset and maybe not much more. That's also in sometime late Friday or into Saturday, gone Sunday evening. Not always, but expect it. I don't think it's very hard to get regional only work tho, most of the mega carriers have regional positions for newbies, you just might not get the same pay/miles as OTR drivers.

Care to share what area you're in, people might have advice for you, companywise. Input from Chinatown is always good stuff on here, I bet he'd tell you a good company or two that will hire in your location, lol.

I think the best advice for finding local work tho, was to go to google maps, and just search for trucking or transport on your hometown map, and see what companies come up and investigate them. They don't usually hire students at local or some of the better regional/linehaul places, but it is not impossible. Insurance does make it tough for some of them, but you will hear success stories on here about situations like that, if you show up looking responsible/professional in person, make em think you're worth a risk.

That aside, unless you have some black marks on your DMV or criminal history, it shouldn't be too hard to get on with a mega carrier of some sort that will give you a regional only position right out of school. Aim high, be prepared for the worst.

Regional work is king with the carriers and the way many are shifting too. Better profit for the carrier, fewer miles yet often more difficult schedules for the driver. What's not to like?
