TMC advice needed

    Hi All-

    I was wondering about peoples views on the company TMC? They hire new school graduates it says on their website. As a new driver should I start out running 53ft vans to get used to the industry or try and get into flat bedding right away.

    It really comes down to what you want to do, flatbed or dry van. Flatbedding is more physically demanding, how do you feel about that? TMC has a great reputation in the industry and the pay is some of the best in the business. Do you want hometime or are you ok being out for 3 to 4 weeks at a time? Read a lot of threads on here about companies you might be interested in but take everything with a grain of salt, some people just complain, others have an axe to grind...look for trends on what you are reading about companies.

    I think going into trucking new, straight into flatbedding is as good a start as any. The mega carriers (dry van) are almost a guaranteed miserable existence the first 6-9 months. Flatbed at least you can hope for true independence and relative content with the job within a few months of going solo. Flatbedding is a lot to do with what you make of it and there's not so much "competition" for limited freight to deal with as in dry van. It's been several years since I left TMC and I suppose things have changed but I'll always recommend TMC and flatbedding to any new driver coming in as long as they have a strong work ethic and are self-motivated and can work independently and can learn quickly.

    When I left, they had one of the better weekend home-time systems I knew of if that was important to you (assuming you're not in a bad area)

    Don't waste your time with van if you really want flatbed. Go right into flatbed from the start.

    The physical demands of the job look like a good idea because I will stay in shape and still get to drive. Staying out on the road would not bother me. I would want to stay out longer because more money then you can have longer hometime. That is if they do one week for a day off.

    Trucking it seems is what you make of it and comes down to the persons attitude who is operating the truck. I try to stay positive calm and hard working at anything I do.

    I worked for TMC for 1.5 years and loved it. First off, I made way more money then any newbie van driver. I made 64k my first year with TMC and even more when i became a trainer. Yes it is more work, yes tarps are heavy, but you get used to it. TMC spends a lot of time teaching securment, so you can start out with flat just fine.     JD If you can polish rims and chrome when you stop for the night you are in at TMC! Their equipment stays pretty no matter what it has just come through! You ill make better money if you can handle the physical aspect of it! Good Luck! T.o M.uch C.hrome is what it is all about. Good Luck.
