    1. How many miles per week are you getting.

    2. How much time do they usually give you to get a load to destination. What is avg miles per day on a lot of the loads.

    3. Are you doing a lot of short runs, or do you get some decent length trips.

    4. Are you getting runs going to texas a lot, or are they keeping you mostly in the far west, where your running up and down mountains all the time.

    5. When you go to a yard, are you able to leave when not under a load. What kind of restrictions, if any, are there on not being able to leave a yard with the truck.

    6. Do you find that there are no emptys a lot of the time when you need one.

    7. Do they pay you for out of route miles when you have to look for a trailer or take a different route because of weather or road closures.

I'm on the other side of the country so I'll only be able to answer a couple of your questions.

I was told that under no circumstances are we allowed to use the company truck as a personal vehicle... i.e. can't drop the trailer at the terminal and go bobtail to Walmart to go shopping. They said they would charge the driver 2.00 per mile for any unauthorized use. Has this ever really been enforced? I don't know. Of course if you're stuck at a shipper or something and running out of hours and need to go park until the morning, bobtailing to a place to park is not a problem. But I wouldn't go cruising around town on Friday night while you're on a layover in the pumpkin-mobile.

If you have to go out of route for weather, returning to a customer because a load didn't scale out correctly, etc., get with your DBL (just for the sake of this pretend a DBL is kind of like a dispatcher) and they will help you get paid for those miles. If you get sent all over the place looking for an empty trailer, your workflow will update to show all the stops so you should (in theory) get paid for those miles.

They can't and won't do anything to prevent you from driving the truck where ever you want to. The only restriction is your logs and if you have legal hours to drive the truck. Do you think they would really monitor to see if you are driving out of route to go shopping and what not? They can't even keep track of their trailers. They aren't going to be monitoring where you are driving the tractor. It'll just count against your out of route miles. Obviously, if your out of route miles are way too high, that will give them the idea to monitor you more closely.

Like you said, they won't let you out of the terminal gate unless you have an assignment that authorizes you to do so. The only place they really have "control" over what you do is when you are at the terminal. Once you leave the gate, forgive the Braveheart quotes, but you have "FREEDOM!!!!"

Look through the threads after page 1. There are at least 2 or 3 other threads about the Western 11 buried in the forums that are kind of recent.

This ones a year and a half old but probably the best one I could find
