I'm looking to get into trucking. I'm 25 years old with only 1 traffic violation, prior service Army but now have a felony on my record and will find out in 3 weeks how long I will be on probation. I've spoken to a few companies that have mainly told me id have to wait 5-7 years and let my felony "age". I'm wondering are there any companies that will take me now. I have been told by Werner Enterprises that they would take me but not while on probation. I'm trying to get in to this ASAP. I haven't been to school yet am going to apply to have the GI Bill pay for my class a license school. Any helpful information would be greatly appreciated.

Trucking has become National Security sensitive thanks to terrorism. You need to get that felony reduced if possible thru a good lawyer.

That won't happen I had to take a plea because I didn't have 20k to pay my lawyer to go to trial. Pretty much wasted $10k paying him what a public defender could have done.

In my opinion, I would wait to start school until you know how long you will be on probation. I say that because, hypothetically, if you start school now and get your license and in 3 weeks you find out you will be on probation for 1 year you wont be able to drive anyway. Also, alot of companies will only take you if you have graduated school within 90 days. So if you have to wait a year, most companies out there will require you to take a refresher course which will cost more money. FYI, the VA will not pay for a course you have already taken, so the refresher will come out of your own pocket. I am a vet and I used my post 9/11 to pay for my CDL, thats how I know this. I know it sucks dude but honestly youre probably better off waiting until you find out what happens in court. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the advice. I actually will just do that. I'm hoping to have less than a year. My next issue is getting the VA to pay for it. Since I was arrested when I only had 4 months left service. I was chartered out 2 weeks before my ETS date. I received a general under honorable and on my DD-214 it says continuous honorable service up till the day I was arrested. I spoke to the VA today and he told me technically I'm disqualified for GI bill because of my discharge type but my arrest had nothing to do with my behavior in the military and they put serious misconduct but told me to apply anyway

Look for local work in your state. Doesn't pay a lot but you can at least start driving. BTW if your felony is drug related don't bother with the driving thing until it drops off.

It's not drug related nor violent so I should be good. I know I could start driving if I moved to Florida. My cousin has his own company and is looking for another driver and he would hire me but have to get approved to leave the state.

Yea, all you really can do is apply and hope for the best. It sucks that the VA would deny your benefits, especially since you have already paid into the GIB. You will basically just have to decided how badly you want to drive and if you get denied from the VA, then pay out of pocket or get a loan. There are trucking companies out there that offer tuition reimbursement, so check into which ones offer that when making your decision. Btw, thank you for your service. Regardless of what happened with your arrest, the Military is not an easy life and only people who have done it before know how difficult it can be!!!

The guy at the VA is wrong. Dishonorable you lose everything, any other discharge you don't.
There are several companies that hire felons, but don't have their own CDL school. Let us know if it doesn't work out with your cousin and put your location on your profile so we know the hiring area you live in.

I am looking to get into truck driving. I don't have a Cdl and I need to go to school or can I find someone to train me? I'm 47 and widowed and i have 2 grown daughters. I thought it would be a good way to see the country while working. I'm really looking to team up with someone. Thanks for any help
