I apologize if this is a dumb question. Please feel free to correct me if any of the information I am giving is incorrect.

I am in the process of buying my tractor and have to decide whether I will go with Texas only or Apportioned plates. I will only be running Texas and Louisiana due to insurance mileage limitations.
I have filed for USDOT # and TXDOT# I have NOT filed for my MC Authority.
It is my understanding that I will have more options with brokers if I have an MC Authority. I want to get my MC Authority but I heard it can take up to 6 weeks to get approved. I really don't want to wait another 6 weeks to get on the road.

    My question is the following:

Can I buy the truck with apportioned plates (Texas and Louisiana) and only run in Texas until the MC Authority is approved?

    Thanks for your help.

There are companies that can get you your Authority a lot quicker than 6 weeks.I don't remember their company names but I have seen that advertized in the truck paper.or you may want to ask OOIDA how long they can do it for.

if you buy a base plate than you can not cross state lines, If you plan to run TX & LA you need an IRP plate

From my understanding of your question is... Your truck has to be under someone's authority whether it be your own authority or under someone else as in leased on. And most brokers (notice how I said "most") won't give you a load unless you have your own authority which requires you to have the necessary liability and cargo insurance already in place. I don't think it should take 6 weeks to get your authority. Hope this helps. Good luck.

it won't matter who does the filing for your MC number it will still be 5 to 6 weeks before it becomes active, but you do get your number as soon as you hit the submit button, only takes about 15 min's to do on-line and $300 fee.

Why in such a hurry? There is a minimum amount of time that it will take to get your authority. There is much to do before you can start running. I got Texas authority after getting my MC authority and it didn't take that long to get my intrastate authority to only run Texas. When you cross state lines, you need interstate authority and that comes from the feds. The sooner you apply for your authority, the quicker you can be running. When you get your authority you need to understand that you are dealing with the federal government and they don't get in a hurry doing anything but spending our money. There is little you can do to speed up the process in getting your authority. If you don't have interatate authority, you will greatly limit your ability to do business as a motor carrier. Interstate authority costs $300. Texas authority costs an additional $200. You will need the proper insurance in place before you can get authority from either. I can't see paying anyone to do the filing in either state. You can do both online these days.

Thanks for the feedback. Will I be able to run in Texas only with the apportioned plates until the MC number becomes active?

I've been working on this for a while and want to start working asap. I already have my Texas authority and USDOT number, I just now learned what you said about limiting my ability to do business as a motor carrier without an MC number. This is why I'm asking if I can run in Texas until the MC number becomes active.

Really good information from all of you. Thank you.

If you have your Texas authority you can only pick up and deliver within Texas. You will likely want to at least run Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas out of Texas. You can greatly limit yourself with only Texas intrastate authority. There are a lot of loads moving in and out of Texas from those states that I listed. Of course, it also depends on the type of freight you want to haul.

You didn't mention the type of freight you plan on hauling. Unless you try to do power only, you will also need to buy or rent a trailer. At one time you could make a decent living hauling within what I call the Texas triangle. This is the area from San Antonio to Dallas to Houston. I have known a few owners who have done well in that area and managed to be home frequently. I have not seen that much in that area that is worth hauling lately.
