I have a question, I heard if you have a 1995 rig you don't have to put on the filter system...by 2016 ill just have to put a newer engine with all those filters. that true?

I assume your talking about running in California? By 2014 all grandfathered trucks must be in compliance regardless of year. That means a Diesel Particulate Filter. By 2016, you will need a 2009 or later engine with a filter that uses DEF (i think its 09)

Yea, i was thinking of buying a rebuilt 1995 for cash. Work on it for a couple years, save up some money and buy a newer on by 2016 and sell that one. so I can start from somewhere

Not necessarily a bad idea. Although, I notice you're "experience" is listed as a student. Understand that successfully running a truck as a leaser or independent is not something to take lightly. It's a lot more than just getting down the road.
That being said, by the time you put a new motor in, run new exhaust, mount a DEF tank, new harnesses for the motor, etc. you'll be in it enough to have a used '09 or newer truck by 2016 in my opinion.
Doesn't mean you can't do it that way. Soon enough, the guys who dig the vintage equipment will be running old A-models and 359s with a DEF tank on the side.serge10 Thanks this. -
I drive a straight truck in California and we considered upgrading our old trucks but the cost was prohibitive, there was no way to make our money back that way.

My other idea was, my pops got a 1999 Volvo. Someone told us if we get a newer truck with new filters. We can still use our 99volvo for another year? My dad is owner operator so ill be team driver with him for the beginning...what guys think would be better to do in my situation?

given the fact that pretty much all emissions standards we have today. were started with california in the first place. and possibly even ideas that were thought up and passed on to EPA. and i'm talking cars as well as trucks.
now, add the fact that most states don't want you idling anymore. unless you have a epa certified sticker on the truck.
i can see the day where ALL older trucks will be forced off the road. and who knows. the gooberment may try the cash for scrap idea on trucks. like they did with cars. just recently. in an effort to get the older cars off the road and boost new car sales.
force the older emission gas guzzlers off the road for cleaner gas economy cars.serge10 and landstar8891 Thank this. -
With the way the rates are and all the taxes and expences to run a small business,i myself would NEVER consider a ''new'' high dollar truck...There would be nothing left over for the driver..Well maybe a few crumbs..
You would be working for the GOOBERMENT MAFIA...serge10 Thanks this. -
DPF is the filter started in '08 DEF is the fluid started in mid 2011
serge10 Thanks this. -
99 engines were banned last year unless you already filed an extension.that extension is no longer available. If you want to start out in Cali, you're going to need an 08 or newer truck. You can buy an older one and put a filter on it, but don't expect it to run well or be as reliable.serge10 Thanks this.
