Ok, my husband and I drive team in a straight truck. (T660 Kenworth w/ 24 ft box) Right now it isn't bad because we have a lot of down time. (sitting) so we at least get to sleep un-disturbed. We also are not making much money for all the time we spend in the truck on the road. About 800.00 to a 1000.00 a week together. (400 to 500 per week each). When we started this I thought we would get to see different places, go to attractions when not underload ect. Not happening. When not on a load all we can do is sit in the parking lot of a truck stop. Can't get the truck into, like say that chinese restaraunt we just passed, so have to eat the truck stop food! (yuck) Can't do a lot of the things we thought we would because there is not truck parking. This is not the fun we thought it would be. When making money we get no rest because when I sleep he is driving and when he sleeps I am driving so the truck does not stop. We get very tired. It is very difficult to sleep in a moving bouncing truck. Also not getting to go home for 3 and 4 weeks at a time. Expedite companys expect drivers to be out for 3 to 4 weeks before going home. So there are then the issues of taking care of home. I can do a lot of bill paying on the net but some things you have to be home for like mowing, cleaning, ect so I have to hire these things done. Summer 50 to a 100 a week for mowing, plus 75 to 100. per week year round for cleaning. Some of you think cleaning? I have a 19 year old son at home by himself! Unfortunately, I never taught him to clean because I was always there to do it. So yes I have to have a cleaner come in once a week for floors, dusting, bathrooms, ect.

    Now my questions:

Is it any better with a class a?

Is it best to go Solo or Team?

How does Class A driving work?

Do you get sleep time or is everything Del Direct as it is with Expedite?

I see drivers dropping their trailers at the truck stop and going off in the cab. Can you use the cab as a vehicle to go places like that chinese restaraunt? Is that what the drivers are doing when they drop their trailers off?

How much do solo A drivers make and how much do team A drivers make per week?

How much home time do you get? How often do you get home?

I'm just going to keep it short. Upgrade to class A's, go team with each other, don't look back! :p

The biggest factor will be if you get with a company that you like or not. If you do you'll love it, if not just remember you can always go elsewhere. You can also expect to double what you presently make per week.

Must be nice to be 19 years old, do what you wanta do and have a maid and gardener that mama pays for. Sorry to say, but not teaching him to clean is the least of it.....

I agree. Make that 19 yr old mow the grass. Make him clean up after himself and then maybe have a housemaid come in every other week for light house cleaning

Upgrade your licenses to class A asap. Turn in the expeditor truck and start looking for team companies. The best payers I know of are TSMT and Wagoneers auto transport. I believe the pay scales are from .55 cpm to .70 cpm (depending upon the load).

New Century (ltl division) also offers over .50 cpm for team drivers. Of course there are many others out there its up to you how hard you want to run.

As for bobtailing just get permission from your company first and be sure you have a safe secure location to drop your trailer. Use the bobtail as a "personal conveyance" to go to these restaraunts. If your going to be laid over somewhere for a couple of days rent a car and then do your siteseeing.

Just be forewarned most of the team outfits you talk to will expect 5000 to 6000 miles per week out of you.

As for pay you should be making about 2000 to 2500 per week (together).

If you want to sleep each night without the truck moving then solo is what you should be looking at. A good pay week for a solo can be 1200+ depending upon the rate of pay and the miles driven.

Is it better? That's subjective, but I'd think it gives you more options.

Solo or team depends on your patience, willingness to not see each other, and how much money you want. I would not long haul solo because I would miss my significant other too much. We'd make more money, but only if we both did it, and that wouldn't happen.

Class A is probably not much different than class B. The only differences I can see is you're often longer, and you can drop and hook.

Sleep time as a team depends on how you run, and how your company will let you run. My dispatcher lets us run western region, so we run reduced milage. That means we get to shut down more often. Sometimes there's loads that we have to run non stop, so one of us is sleeping while the other drives. We hate those loads, as sleep in the moving truck is tough.

Sometimes you can drop the trailer and take off in the bobtail. It all depends on where you're at. If we're in a truck stop, we'll stay attached to the trailer, since most don't want you dropping the trailer and taking off. If we're in a drop yard, I'll leave the trailer and go take the bobtail to a nearby place to eat or sightsee. I don't go too far, as I'm company and don't want my company complaining I'm wasting fuel.

My company requires you to be out at least 9 days before you get a day off. Then it's 2 days for 2 weeks, 3 days for 3 weeks, and 4 days for 4 weeks. Barring special circumstances, you don't get more than 4 days off.

Ok guys lay off the kid! lol He's my baby! I would never make my child pay rent. He keeps his room clean picks up after himself and does his dishes but as you lady drivers know dusting, vacuming, wiping the kitchen down, bathroom ect has to be done at least once a week. As for mowing, the grass would be to his knees and he would think ahhh it's not ready to cut yet! lol City wouldn't like that. But really, he is a very good kid, just a little spoiled.

Anyway, for the real question, so Keith would make more by himself driving class A then what we are making together right now driving team straight truck?
So, if he went solo and I just rode along we would be able to sleep? I am not really nice when tired. I am one of those people that needs my sleep. :biggrin_25523: As I said right now it is easy but when it picks up and our truck starts running 24/7 again, I just dread that because of the not getting any rest. Our truck really does not stop at all during this time it is just go, go, go. It feels like servitude. As for spending time together, your not spending time together because when ones awake the other is sleeping?
There has to be a better way of doing this?

Depends on the freight you are hauling as to whether you will be prepared to drop your trailer somewhere. You are responsible for the freight. If anything happens to it while you are away it wouldnt be too good.

Some drivers lock their tractor trailers and call a taxi.
