Check the local community colleges/tech schools, they are far and away the best way to get a CDL. They will be cheaper and offer great financial aid and job placement. It may take longer but you will be free to work where you want. 2nd choice would be a commercial driving school like Road masters or ATDS, again your free to work wherever. last resort would be a company school like Swift, or Prime. I would stay away from Stevens, CRE, CRST.

I went to roehl's driver training. I thought that they had a very good training program, and I was able to it paid for by the dwd through the dislocated workers (farmer) program. When I was done with the training I had no commitment to stay with the company. I did, however, stay with them for 3 1/2 years. I dont think that they are any worse than any other large carrier, and as a whole are pretty fair. The chances of finding anything local right out of cdl school is pretty slim, and the "regional" is a real screw job. They usually will get you to run national for less money. My advise is to just run national untill you can find a job that will keep you closer to home.

TexasPhoenix is right on the money with Roehl. Here's the deal, Roehl will do exactly what they say. Roehl is well organized, first class payroll, mechanics, dispatch, etc.. It's probably not perfect in this not so perfect world but if you have a problem or issue it gets addressed by the proper channels. so far everything has been dealt with fairly and appropriately considering the circumstances.

Here's another biggie. I made more money in my last occupation, however, there were a lot of politics, attitudes, and not so classy workplace behavior. One of Roehls expectations is that you "put in an honest days work". If you can do that when expected, I think you would do well starting out with Roehl. My RDTC Class of six were top notch people and showed up everyday, I am pretty impressed with their system and really like the environment of professionalism and people that are as good as they can be. Nice place. Training in Wisconsin, don't let that stop you. Terminal in Grand Prarie Texas you can do most of your other stuff out of there if the recruiter says so. I'm in Michigan, my first trip out solo brought me through 14 states...thats OTR. Goin out again tommorow in the morning, have no idea where yet...still in suspense. I'm hoping to move to texas soon and will base out of GP if I can make that happen.

Most training companies/schools will pay for your transportation to get there, just make sure your legit and talk with the recruiter on any concerns before they drag you out there. You don't want to go home a few days after you got there cause your history wasn't straight. I would also think about what you want to haul which suits you more like critter said. Find out if you would like to haul van, tanker or reefer. there is plenty of differences in each. Also OTR is easiest to land a job in but a girl I know got regional with swift same day as orientation. Also hear swift has a flatbed school in TX somewhere. Companies that pop in my head would be Swift for mainly van then flatbed. Central Refrigerated for reefer. Prime and Schneider for van and tanker. I went to C1 Truck Driving School was fast paced and landed first job with Swift in few weeks, now im @ Kelles Transport Service hauling reefers. Love the job.
