I am not a driver yet. Although I have experience driving a yard truck. It was a Mack cab over. So my backing skills are solid. Well my problem is this. I cant afford a school and the company provided courses around here (central missouri) have a less than good reputation. I had a family member that is an o/o that said he would help. He said just get my permit and he would pay for my dot physical and train me. He said he had been a trainer for a company and he has 15 years experience. Well i passed my test, got endorsements for tank and doubles/triples and was ready for my career to start. WellIm still sitting at home. He blows me off when I try to contact him. So now Im looking for advice on what to do next. I have a family and bills so Im needing to do something.
I'm just needing advice please

How long have you been trying to get ahold of him?Have you been leaving him voice mails? Can you tell us what company he drives for?If you're close with this family member I think he will call you.He might be busy. But even if he does train you to get your cdl,no other company will hire you unless you went thru a school.Maybe that's whats wrong here, his company requires you to have schooling or a cdl before driving for them. There are company sponsered schooling if you can sign a one yr contract then the company pays for it.

Look into the RoadMaster School closest to you. They have a good reputation, and their recruiter may be able to help you land some financial assistance. I went to RoadMaster in Columbus, OH and they did a fine job.

Trailiner in Springfield has a CDL program. They advertise you must live within 100 miles of Springfield, but I would apply anyway if over 100 miles.
Of course there's Prime in Springfield; pays $600.00 a week while with a trainer. A permit is good there plus they offer refrigerated, flatbed, tanker.
Maverick is good, but you must have a CDL, not the permit. Avg. a grand a week or better.
Wil-Trans in Stafford, MO has 3 week CDL program.
Check these & maybe some other drivers will post more options.Lonesome Thanks this. -
Thanks. Im new to all this and in all my searching I think Im getting information overload. Im use to real fast paced work. Maybe I need to relax. Maybe I had too much coffee today.

Aha! I see it now. (Location)...Things have changed dramatically in the last few years so it will def b "tricky"!!! Where did you work that you were driving a yard dog? You can find something like that everyday,BUT the way things are now,I don't think it will give you any experience for being on the road,so you'll stay in the same boat.
JUST from my experience (HHG) and seeing what the regs are, IF being otr is what you're wanting, you either have to go to one of the Mega Carriers and go out with a trainer and stay there a year or so then you will have a lot more options after that.
BUT depending on how fit you are,you can also go to a Van Line outfit and they will definitely put your shiny new Cdl to use,but very physical hands on job. (Mo. Is UNITED VAN LINE COUNTRY) I'm sure more drivers will come on this thread and offer more advise. We've all been there and try to help as much as we can. Wish you well.
Congrats on the CDL!!! -
I worked at Independent Stave, they make barrels for jim beam. I worked the yard/being a mechanic/welder/anything else they needed. I quit because my supervisor had a bit of an anger/throwing tools issue.
