The last CHRW load I did ended up waiting 12 hours to load I was promised the same thing I was going to get something for my time but couldn't give that number until I was dropped.....when I called to get my revised conformation they asked me how much I said I give two hours on each end after that it's $60 a hour, the guy fell out his chair said he has been brokering loads for 15 years and never seen a customer pay that much money.
I don't think its alot I have some costumers I charge $100 a hour. After going back and forth for 20min he said it would be cheaper to pay a truck ordered not used and turned me away, I had a 1pm appointment.
I ended up getting $150 out of them and have not moved a load for them again. I refuse to be threaded like I'm a company driver!!!
And for the people above that said they ask what detention pay is on every load you must get the same thing I get every time brokers always tell me they load there all the time and your in and out or we don't pay anything. I can most the time figure out if it's going to be a in and out load on just what the load is and what I'll be hauling and I'm sure alot of others that have some time under there belt can do the same...
I started to tell people with appointment times that I'm on EOBR that if they hold me up there load is getting pushed back that I can't stop the clock, I've had brokers say ill have them waiting on you but I've also had brokers say. "sorry load just got covered". Ya right!!!!
the conformations I get that says $250 for missed appointment or $50 for not making check calls are what other way they think they can scam me out of money I mark them out before I send them back over and I've had lots of brokers say I couldn't do that some take me off the load some ask why I marked it out some don't even see it.....most the time it's just a scare tactic to make sure you get it there.

red, you have learned in a couple of years, what many don't learn in 30 years. this post out to be framed and given to everyone when they buy their first truck.RedForeman, chalupa and g.o.a.l Thank this. -
$60 to $75 / hr after 2 is common in tankers Bayou. It's paid all the time. I get nothing if late even by 1 minute....in which case....I do not write it down.....
( so they can't try to collect it anyway )BAYOU Thanks this. -
The cheapest rates we have are $40.00 per hour after 4 hours. Customers vary. I have some as high as $65.00 per hour after 2 hours and I have one customer that will not pay detention so I don't haul for him much.
I said this before and I'll say it again.....if it's not on the confirmation sheet you WILL NOT GET PAID....and if you haul la load without a confirmation sheet you are way to stupid to drive a truck in the first place.
As a broker and a truck driver I will tell you that if I can collect from the customer I always pass it on to the driver....reason being I need drivers to stay in business and if I don't treat them right they won't haul for me. -
very good point don't give anyone the opportunity to make money behind your back
-
i get 11 dollars for every 15 minutes after the second hour... no excuses

Well unfortunately so far majority of our loads come from loadboards. So knowing the shipper/consignee is a bit unrealistic cause we're yet to haul for the same shipper twice.
Really? It's hard to believe that your Landstars CH etc... would have a contract with shipper that doesn't mention detention? And not sure if it's just me but i can't imagine CH tell me straight away what they have in their contract with the shipper. Maybe i should try next time but i'm expecting a good laugh from one of their phone monkeys.
Yeah i wouldn't do it for a $100, but at least it's something in my arsenal to threaten them with, maybe get them to make that extra phone call to the shipper.
Sure not a big deal, but i do have an issue where they threaten to deduct $50 if we don't check in everyday, deduct whatever they choose to if we're late, and then when we bust our ### to be on time, pay $1,000 just to fix a freon leak on Sunday night, just to be held back 5hrs and loose our next freight and then be told that we won't even get detention. Think truckers accepting this as normal course of business is as much of the problem as truckers hauling cheap loads not knowing their true costs.
So i'm not the only one with this experience. I'd love to have all terms including detention spelled out in every rate confirmation that i get, but realistically speaking think i have a better chance winning a lottery.
That's what i do already. Just corss stuff our and add lumpers and detention in the rate confirm sheet. Legally, when you send them the rate confirm back that's a counter offer, and if they let you load they have accepted the counter offer. I'm yet to have broker call back or not accept my scribbles. Problem is CH doesn't even want the rate confirm back with the signature. Have no idea how they can get away with that??? -
Amen to that...That is why i am moving away from Landstar...More and more we are being treated as if were were PRIME Drivers..BAYOU Thanks this.

That was my point. You will, eventually. Until then, you will continue to get some time consuming and sometimes expensive lessons.
So just ask, if it's something important to you. If you don't like the answer, end the call. Maybe the children working at TQL will laugh, but any broker I deal with will either tell me they have terms or they don't. It's a fair question. I'll throw it out like this: "I haven't been there before. How are they on load times and do you have detention terms in case they're not in the world of time?" If they waffle, expect unpaid detention and bump your quote to make up for it.
You have the wrong attitude. Threaten? Please.
After a while you're gonna figure out that, except in some very rare occasions, the broker is as powerless as anyone up and down the chain with fixing problems. Maybe less powerless and more conflict of interest. Think about that a minute. He's getting 100 loads a week from this shipper and you're barking in his ear. Do you honestly think he's going to phone whip his customer?
You have more control over what's going on right there at the truck. Call the broker to advise. Don't expect he's able or willing to make it all better for you.
Maybe you're still feeling the sting from that after-hours reefer repair. Make an effort to solve the problems you can control, do what you can to minimize the fallout on those you can't. Giving yourself a stroke over a few hours detention isn't worth it.
So don't accept it. You're the boss. If you don't like the terms, just say no thanks. Getting all legal on them won't get you anywhere on a few hours detention. In fact, it will guarantee you won't get anywhere.
Do you know why I haven't hauled any LS or CHR loads in almost two years? Because A: Calling on their loads equals a cheap offer and B: My login password expired on both their sites and I refuse to waste yet another half hour of my life to wait in their phone queue for a reset every three months just so I can log in and waste even more time to see more cheap loads than I already see elsewhere. The only time I consider one is when they call on my posted truck. I know how they are and what they expect, so I either take it at a good rate to make up for their BS or refuse the offer. Simple. -
Yeah good advice, guess there's no magic solution that i was missing. Being new you don't have the luxury of good brokers to go with so you're stuck with Landstar CHR TQL XPO etc... which means that on top of the cheap, no profit margin, rates you have to deal with their weasel tactics a double whammy which consumes all of your time that could be spent looking for shippers direct.
