Congratulations, very pleased for you. May your cup overflow with black Albertan gold.

FWIW some of the rotation workers, especially the BC cats, value quality of life over work time. Or, shall we say, more of a work-life balance. 15/6 doesn't offer much quality R&R once you have travelled home for 1/3 of that time off. Maybe OK for young AB boys who just go and drink swill at the local bar. Longer time spent at home offers a bit more relaxation, gone fishin' days, beer time, etc.

So, yes, there is reduced pay, but it offers more time at home enjoying life. And if you're already earning well over $100k, then a $15-20k "pay cut" to fully enjoy life is just a load of whatever. Most out-of-province guys can live like a king on anything over $60k. Just goes back to that "personal values" aspect of the patch. We all get different things from it. Not everything is down to $.

    Hey Jamesg

Well I went up there, did the training and orientation - spent 2 weeks in camp at Surmont 2, not bad - from the camps I've been in before it certainly gets a couple bonus points, for starters your room has its own bathroom AND shower, thats a huge plus, the food is pretty great and has a 6 week revolving schedule.

Btw, Flint is hiring about 500 guys for nightshift for the project.. PCL, Abilone, Voice Construction, Horton CBI, Northern Crane, Clark Builders and several other companies are there to work on the project. The deadline is about august 15th / 2014 - and they're hoping to have it all done to flip the switch then.

Also, I got called for an interview for a vac/water truck position with J.B. Water out of Millet - anyone here worked for them? They seem to be really interested, and I am supposed to go up there tomorrow morning. I have only done 1 two week rotation up at Surmont and am supposed to head back up there on friday.

Anyone have any experience with that =- ? Job I have is decent, operating a 44 passenger yellow school bus / crew bus for First Canada, hours are goofy but there are some decent perks. I am not sure whether to stay with them or hop into a water truck, where my destination was is into a rock truck or something for Voice constr. - I took the job with First Canada to get into the union, then switch to one of the other companies asap, however it is oe955 it is on the B side.. argh. Bantrel also has a stupid rule in place stating if you leave one company on site you cant go to another company on site unless you actually leave the site for 3 months. This is in place so guys follow the rules and supervisors/foremen don't poach from each other.

What do you guys think.. stick it out for a bit with FC ? I could probably be a lead hand with them by the next rotation, they're hurting for people and it has a really high turnover, the people who are there generally can't drive, can't back up and are whiny little buggers.

Or jump over to JB after only doing 2 weeks at FC, forget all about it and go run water truck ?

I'm sure Lucien has experience with them, he's done everything :D

    oilfield Thanks this.

If the money is decent driving bus stick with it for awhile. Camp sounds good. Get established wait for a reputable company to make an offer. It will come eventually. Last thing you wanna do is start jumping from company to company chasing .50 an hour. Put your time in be patient you already have your foot in the door.

I know my mom knows a woman back home who's husband was driving for jb and she said the money was fantastic (of course that's each to their own interpretation) and my mom is in her 70s and this lady was probably in her late 50s. Anyway last I heard he was down in Central America doing something else oil and gas related, not sure if it's with jb or not?? I think they follow rigs and such. Anyway... Decisions hey? I agree about not changing coveralls for another buck an hour but also you wanna fin that sweet job that pays good and you really enjoy and that may take a few kicks at the can.

I am also torn, I love my job, I will gross probably just over 110k this year and that's only working an average of 10 days (jobs) per month, and it's probably one of the easiest jobs out there. Thing is I love running crane and can see that as more of a long term gig in week or 2 week in/out camp jobs, same money, more time at home. I just don't wanna take a pay cut to swamp on a crane and get my higher ticket. So I am staying where I am at and staying put for now...but always looking ha ha.

Doesn't 10 days work = 20 days at home? Or is there more to the story.

My shift is 15/6 so shop days and boring weekends while I am here. Although dispatch cuts me loose a day early so really it's 14/7 for me, I don't think the other guys like it lol. If my family was local here in sylvan it would be a dream job, I am jealous of the guys here, home most nights, if not on a job weekends off an shop days are done at noon unless there is stuff to do.

I assume you have good enough reasons not to move and make it your dream job. Sounds like a good gig .
