I have a few questions on hiring.
I currently live near the Twin Cities and planning on attending Century College for CDL (CLASS A) this January. I would honestly like to get local work, but I'm not opposed to getting on OTR for the experience until necessary. I'm 25 years old, married, no kids. My wife is very supportive of me getting my CDL. I do have a Bachelors degree, but my job is not giving me any raises after working 1.5 years at the company. $29k is not going to cut it, after getting a degree for nothing...
I see local work that is hiring $17-$24/hr. $35,000-$50k a year.
I'm planning to get my endorsements before school starts on my permit. So I can focus on driving and learning the rules during school. I have always wanted to do driving, just thought a college degree would have gotten me farther. My father drove over the road, and he loved it. But, I have a wife that I would like to see. She is willing to sacrifice a year if need be to get my experience out there. I see some companies that do hire students, and I'm wondering what else might be in the area to hire me if I get my endorsements, and have NO VIOLATIONS/CLEAN BACKGROUND and my age being 25 I'm better for their Truck Insurance.
What's out there for me in the Twin Cites to Chippewa Valley?
Century College is 4 weeks, and I have been saving money since June. We're planning on me quitting my job at the end of the year. I'll be out of a pay check until I find something after school. This will be manageable. I'm looking for work in February.

Hot freight systems, they have a terminal Afton and based in West Salem WI, watch craigslist in the metro area. Fed EX ground is always looking for drivers, well, their contractors are. Out and back daily on a solo run, team runs available but home weekends. You could probably pick up some extra cash by working for fed-ex sorting packages/delivering local during Christmas end of year rush time. Many other opportunities in Metro area, a driver with a good record should have no problem in landing a job. Feb will be a little tougher, but it will work out fine.
BrianRGX Thanks this. -
Swift is right there in Inver Grove Heights, and the people there are nice.
Others might warn against Swift, but there are far worse companies to work for. -
I deliberately did not go the well traved newbie path through a mega carrier.. those the advertise and recruit new drivers...
You have a lot going for you and if you have drive and determination you can get on with a local company.. the mpany that just took me on says they require 3 years minimum recent experience.. I had 0 recent experience and only a few months years ago..
But, I have a clean record.. both MVR and Background and solid work history... So, go knock on doors and talk to them...Chinatown, luvtotruck and BrianRGX Thank this. -
Check Careerbuilder and Indeed websites for local jobs. I remember a couple of new CDL grads posted they were hired hauling diesel fuel to truck stops & one of them was Loves Truck Stop. An example of what 883BedomRider posted; I worked for a tanker/hazmat company that advertised you must have 3 years tanker/hazmat experience, but they hired 2 new CDL grads while I worked there & those guys were just as good as the rest of us after company tanker school and a couple of months on the road. It's not too early to start researching companies. Look at Foodliner, Superior-Carriers, local chemical and cement companies. Maybe tanker hauling dry bulk cement or flyash; every city has those jobs.

Check with McLane Grocery Distribution in Northfield, MN. They might actually train you in their 'Grow our own' program.
McLane drivers make excellent money and benefits if you're fit to handle the work.

Thanks for all the great information! I will be adding all those companies to my list of places to apply for local work. I've also been talking to drivers that deliver to my current job, they've been very helpful.

Get your CDL, and some experience, and contact me if you want to haul gas in the metro...

Oh please let me say this. I Disrespect no one. You need 3-5 solid years in a truck before you haul anything that go's BOOM/ Tankers are a different breed of trailer. I do not recommend it for a green Driver. My .2 cents.
