    DOT and MC numbers are registered to a company, not a person, and hence with new ownership of the company they do transfer.

    Not entirely true. One of the questions asked when applying for authority is the past ownership/authority of any principal involved trying to pull the numbers. This is to eliminate people from running a poorly safety rated company, shutting it down either by choice or by DOT, then starting a new one. So yes the numbers will follow the company name, however if answered honestly they are linked to the principal as well.

    Wow, this thread went no where... so what is it? Is it better to buy out someone else's company, or not? Would buying an older company be beneficial to a new O/O or not?

    It's hard to get credit, get brokers to book freight with you and especially hard to get trucking companies to haul freight for you if you have a brand new MC#, no references, no established credit and no references. This guy is looking to jump start a company for whatever reason.....
