Just goes to show you how much drivers don't check ahead of time.
I have a DeLorme GPS on my laptop, but it is just another tool, along with my truckers atlas and cell phone. All three will get me directions, and I take the extra time when I get the dispatch to use all three.
I always call the place I am going and get TRUCK directions in there. Most of them I have had no problems with getting good directions. -
I whole heartedly agree! GPS technology is not an exact science. I consider mine a supplemental tool and not a replacement for the standard procedures.
I do love having it especially for those times when a road sign is missing or directions are a bit fuzzy.
I had another driver the other day tell me he uses google earth to see what kind of parking a shipper/receiver might have for showing up the night before. -
Great idea! Google Earth FTW

You can tell it's a residential but you can't see the gate with google earth. Of course the city should post the truck route to the industrial park from the major arteries and post the residential section of 5th street as "no trucks" if they haven't done it yet.

I agree the GPS can get you lost sometimes, You gotta use like it is a tool. I know that I am a new trucker. I am almost done with my 28 days on the CRST Lead truck but I have seen how to do it. You gotta use your atlas, and your phone, and most of all you eyes and brain.

After a whole year, you would think that someone reported it to the GPS company for an update.

Up in WI where I run the most, there are 4 lane roads that have been there for 6 or 7 years, that are not on the map. The bypasses are the biggest offenders. Going around some of the towns, it looks like you're just plowing through fields.
This is why I always verify where I am going.
It still amazes me why drivers will go past a no truck sign and then wonder why the neighbors are mad.
