We just received several new Freightliners with Series 60 Detroits and the new emission systems. They are so loud inside that it is almost unbearable at certain rpms, (1250-1350 and around 1500) It's a constant roar that is so loud we can't even hear the radio. HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THIS WITH THE "08 MODELS? I'm actually considering changing jobs if I they can't quiet this thing down a bit. I started driving before noise standards were put in place and my hearing has paid the price. Don't want to lose what i have left.
Noisy new Freightliners

Um straight pipes or mufflers, my dad has a 3406e cat in his truck with straight pipes in it and its loud and my truck had a n14+ cummins in it with mufflers and is as quite as my pickup (stock exhaust).

I find all freighliners to be loud. We had fld's a columbia and a century at the last place I worked and they all sucked. the new century had so much wind noise over the top of the cab and through the doors that there is no way you could talk n the phone if you wanted to. They'd always get mad at me for not answering my phone but my fld was so loud I couldn't hear it ring
Magnum1 Thanks this. -
Yeah I foud Freightliners to be loud as well...the Volvo I drive now is really quiet in comparison....Freightliner had a Detroit in it I believe and the volvo has the Cummins ISX..

Ummm, I don't know if this is practical at all for truck driving, but how about a noise-canceling headphone?

Wouldn't a noise-canceling headphones be able to cancel the noise of the truck? They cancel ambient noise. They can cancel the noise in small piston-engined planes effectively. Which is quite a loud drone as well. Don't know about truck engines, but they should be able to reduce it a lot, at least. Of course he'd have to plug it into something. Hopefully the radio has a headphone jack.

The international I have now is so much quieter then the Columbia I came out of...
As for noise cancelling headsets the best I have used so far is the Motorola Jawbone. People don't even know I am driving when I am on it. I love the thing. -
We have Internationals where I work, and I have to admit they are quiet. Nice going down the road, you can hear the CB and your radio without having them up so loud. -
Thanks for the replies!
I've been in Freightliners for years, including the one this new truck replaced, an '01 Classic. While they were not really quiet, they were no where close to these new ones with the fancy exhaust. Believe me, these things are downright painful to drive. I actually wear my hearing protectors to avoid the terrible headaches I got the first couple of days. This problem seems specific to the new "clean technology" Freightliners.Magnum1 Thanks this.
