Hi all, so I start class soon -Wife and I are living N. Ft Worth right now, but plan on moving soon. We are a little confused on the where to settle at with me driving for Millis in Texas - I thought any town along route 69 was going to be best, but then someone said most Millis drivers use route 31 most - I'd like to be able to stop at home during my reset periods and what-not whenever possible and make this transition as easy as I can. (my wife is concerned about home-time) Can someone give me a clear picture as far as which route do Millis drivers get up and down the most? When coming in and out of Tx, that is, Thanks.

I wouldn't make a move based on your first driving job unless it was required to be near a terminal. Fort Worth seems fine but if you're moving anyway ... it's hard to say. Do they have some sort of "Texas fleet"? You need to be near a major city. Living "on the way" or "in between" is not good in many circumstances. You're usually under a load with a rapidly approaching appointment 300 miles away. Yes, it's nice to be a able to stop in for "lunch" regularly. But as sure as you think you've discovered a common route for them, things will change.

Maybe the guys over in the Millis forum can be of help but be sure you're going to be in the DFW area, Houston, Laredo, San Antonio, and a few other areas real regular. I would try and be near a terminal of theirs wherever they have one in TX.

Chances are you will be doing your 'resets' when you run out of time, most likely you wont be in your home state. The only time I did resets at my home, I was on my home time. And unless your moving was planned before you got a trucking job, It's not a good idea. Good Luck

As a former Millis employee, I hate to break it to you, but Millis does not run much freight west of the Mississippi, even TX. The reason they have a facility in TX is primarily because of the local North Texas division. Those guys are local and home every day, but with trucking home daily rarely equals a decent paycheck (except LTL). The terminal in Burleson is primarily for the North Texas fleet that runs beer out of Miller in Ft Worth to Dallas and N.TX, and glass out of Waco back to Miller. When I was with Millis, I trained several students from the TX school who couldn't believe how rare it was to get home or by the house. They will get you home (to the best of their ability) to satisfy your hometime request (7 day notice required), but occasional runs by the house will be rare. So in summation, I would recommend staying where you are, if you live within their hiring criteria, and if you plan on staying in TX, I would stay within an hour or so of the brewery or the terminal.

Got this right off their own web site (removed addresses and phone numbers).
Looks like they have a drop yard in Ft. Worth, so it may be a place you can leave your personal vehicle when working and tractor/trailer when on home time. That coupled with the two beer plants in Ft. Worth (it is my understanding that Millis hauls a LOT of beer), tells me you live right where you need to live to get the best home-time you possibly can. Stay right where you are.

p.s.- you may want to ask Millis if parking at the drop lot in Ft. Worth is indeed an option. Or if they will require the truck to be at the terminal in Burleson, just south of Ft. Worth off I-35W.
