Thanks aimhigh, No I haven't committed yet. I just finished school and am scheduled to take the DMV test on the 28th. I'm confident I'll pass. The companies I did contact want me to have the CDL license before they'll talk to me even though I've submitted the app. When I get it I plan on calling all the co's on my list. I will certainly read your post as I need all the input I can get. Picking the right first company is a very important step.
I think the companies I researched and the ones Chinatown suggested should be a pretty good starting point.
I've talked to a couple of Knight drivers who are very happy. I have yet to talk to any others.
Thanks again
Just finished school, now which company

Aimhigh, could you send me a link to your Questions to ask the Recruiter post? The search function won't work for me. Thanks

Why oh why did you wait until after you got your CDL to start looking at companies?
Forget the mega starter companies.
Here is a couple thousand to start with: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=list...F-8&ei=mWVjUs2lBsjhyQGc-YH4Ag&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAg
Don't take the path of least resistance, it's the losers way out.
Get off the coulch and hit the bricks looking. There are some great smaller companies that will hire new drivers. You have to be willing to put in the effort to find them. -
Wow...out of those 3..I would quit the truck driving industry compleatly!!
-
I generally like smaller outfits, but if I had to choose out of those three I would choose Gordon granted it has been a while since I checked them out but when I did they had a good safety rating and their drivers I have talked to over the years had good things to say about them. Remember people are more likely to post negative comments about a company even if a company on here has a hundred negative comments that's out of the thousands of employees that currently work for a bigger outfit and the thousands that worked for them in the past. Welcome and good luck remember the first year is the hardest if you can make it past that you will be fine. Keep the door shut, wheels spinning the seat covers grinning, and the shiny side up!
Sailguy Thanks this. -
I've been researching companies for months. According to most posts on this site there isn't a company out there that won't screw you. Those 3 are the best I could come up with.
That's why the thread asking about them. -
So you give me a google list with Werner, C.R. England and Swift on the top. Really?
Why do so many posters claim there are so many great "smaller" companies to work for but never give any names? -
Look beyond your nose and at the map that comes up. Look at the hundreds of dots on the map. Each of those is a trucking company. Move your mouse over the dot and it will give you a name, address, as well as possibly a phone number and website.
I could give the the names of several small companies in my area which is NOT Southern California. That is why you need to get off your ### and do some research.
Why is it so many posters claim they have done "extensive" research but the best they can come up with are 3 mega carriers. If that is the best you can come up with, then you are screwed before you start.ThatboyB Thanks this. -
Again, I have tried many small companies and I get the same answer. Need experience!
Why do so much searching and maybe find a small co. that may or may not be a good one?
If I drive for a "mega" carrier for 6 to 12 months I can pick and choose ANY co. to drive for. -
Am sorry 2 say ur gonna have 2 go out with a company good/bad that take students u are unfortunately will have to get your experience usxpress will take u at 3 months experience so go get 3 or more months u should be ok for a start
