Well if you notice and I've seen a many of truck stop's around the country, when you walk down the hall's where the shower's are there's normally a camera on each wing(hallway) facing down it seeing and recording every movment in the hall and the janitor's somewhere close by and they will come to a scream. I know this because I heard a lady scream one time. She had a guest hitch hike in with her bag and nothing better than a harmless water bug. Nothing to worry about inside the truck stop's. Something is more likely to happen to someone outside walking to or from your truck.

I am not on the rd yet but I just wanted to say to skunk truck this is funny. I'm no truck driver. I'm a non-refrigerated load relocation engineer!" -
-
No, it sounded to me like she thought they could stop at a hotel at night, get regular sleep, shower up and go again in the morning. (Correct me if I'm wrong Jen)
This is simply not the case. Driving a truck is a very demanding job and I don't mean to scare you away from it... then again, maybe I do. I think the driving schools should have a prerequisite: Road Trip 101... where you spend a week in an OTR truck before you actually get to the classroom. It'd weed out a lot of people who think they might like to drive a truck for a living I'd bet.
With that being said, you're already concerned about the safety in truckstops. I'll tell you right now that a truckstop shower is going to be a walk in the park compared to the warehouse districts in most large cities. As a general rule, the warehouses are not located in the nicer parts of town. In fact, some places you might have to go are downright scary--the south side of Chicago comes to mind... Bayonne, NJ... Newark... Miami... Dallas... New Orleans... and the list goes on and on.
Crackheads will jump on the side of your truck--begging for money, trying to sell you stuff or worse... rob you. If you're the kind who locks your car door when you drive in the "bad neighborhood", you're gonna be in for a rude awakening when you get out on the road. Think about it long and hard, and maybe even try to get a ride with a driver who frequents a city like Chicago. I'd be willing to bet you'll change your mind. -
sweetlovely - as you're headed into the showers, you will be raped. as you shower, someone will break in and rape you. as you head back out to your truck, you'll be raped yet again. haven't you ever seen a Lifetime movie?
actually, how much research HAVE you done on trucking? most companies won't hire a boyfriend/girlfriend team. only husband/wife or 2 men or 2 women.
"I think the driving schools should have a prerequisite: Road Trip 101... where you spend a week in an OTR truck before you actually get to the classroom."
if they did THAT - they'd be out of business in less than a month. if trucking companies put in their newspaper ads all the crap you will have to put up with in taking their job, the trucking industry would cease to exist. -
I agree! It would be horrible in your case to get a fluffy version of what teaming is. You wouldn't want to spend the money and time for schooling and training just to see that what people told you was not in fact the way it really is. And trust me, if you can not take this response it is going to be really hard dealing with some of the men (I said some!
) out here on the road and what they are going to be saying to you. All the Ohhh Babies can get pretty annoying when you pull into a truck stop at 5 in the evening. LOL
As for the truck stops showers, they are fine and perfectly safe. My husband and I tend to try to shower at shift change in the afternoon when they arent so busy so we can get in and get out. At night though, don't go in by yourself, you just never know about dark parking lots. I have trouble with this, I hate to wake my hubby up to walk in with me, so usually I just run in, I am sure I can out run most of these guys out here. hehehe
If you have the right frame of mind and can take a little BS this can be a very fun, profitable, busy lifestyle. Def really do some research though before paying a bunch of money or signing on a dotted line. This isn't for everyone, especially woman. Im not saying you have to be a farm girl or something to do this, I am def not that way, but you do have to have the right attitude and be able to take things with a grain of salt.
PM me anytime if you have any questions!

Yeah, now I'm lmao! lol No one will bother you inside the truck stop, however you should alway remain alert when walking to and from your truck to the building. Their are homeless people, drug dealers, prostitutes ect in the truck stop lots. As for taking a shower, yes they are safe. I am a women and have been driving OTR for 1 year 9 months and have never had a problem in the shower area. The shower has a deadbolt on the inside that should be locked whenever you are in the room.
Story, Dallas, Texas New Years Eve 2006. My husband and I are sitting in the truck with the windows down Keith is talking to another driver in the truck next to us. A prostitute walks up and ask Keith and this other driver if they would like her company. They both replied no, so she walks around the truck and looks up at me sheepishly, and smiles real big. At first I am at a loss for words. Then I politely asked her "what do you want me to do, convince them? No! Go away I told her! She smiled and walked away.
Now when a 'lot lizard' comes to the window we have a little game we play. Keith will ask her what she wants, he will then turn to me and say 'honey, can I have a lizard tonight? to which I reply 'no honey, I just de-fleaed the dogs, the last one gave them fleas! Amazingly the lot lizard needs no further coaxing to move on. l

Pardel, you must be a true comedian. That was a good one. I love your attitude. It is much healthier than getting angry at some trashy lizard bothering you guys.
-
There is no need to be upset at the poor lizards they are just trying to make a living, just as I am just trying to protect my dogs from fleas. lol
-
dangit, is that's what's causing the fleas? I'll have to scold my dog for picking up lizards... LOL

A lot of people are telling you the hard facts. If you decide to drive as a team you will be lucky if you have a rare chance to stay overnight in a hotel, which the expense will most always be yours. There normally are lots of security/or people inside places like T/A or Pilot so that is not an issue. Just watch yourself in the lots. Something I personally invested in is some pepper spray which I have never had to use...and in the rare event I have to use the bathroom at a rest area and my hubby was passed out in the sleeper I just take my faithful tire checker with me, lol! It is not intened to be used as a weapon, but if you have to carry it in with you, as I have, anyone/thing that would normally "bother" you tends to leave you alone, lmao! :smt075
