I am looking at a 1988 Pete 379 with a Big Can 400 and a 13 spd with a 130k original miles here in AZ. The truck has been sitting for a while and the owner fired it up and wants to sell it. Don't have any experience with this engine. Is it a good reliable high mileage motor? Are parts plentiful? Is it easy to work on? Any info is greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Big Cam 400

call Pittsburg Power and ask for their cummins guy, forget his name... He can help you with your question, better than anyone I know...

Bruce is his name. The big cam 400 was one of the best engines ever built, can make a lot of horsepower, most any old mechanic can work on them and very reliable. Fuel mileage will be determined by your right foot.OLDSKOOLERnWV and SheepDog Thank this.

High mileage-depend on how pump is set up.parts are everywhere.yes easy to work on.if truck sat for more than 6 months you need to check everything, seen truck parked on side of a hill, fluid drained out of valley burnt up bearing, melted spindle end, busted hub.test drive it a mile or two, stop check hubs look and smell.

We had 5 of those things!!! As far as I'm concerned after the ones we had & many, many trucks we have worked on in our shop.......I don't think you could buy a more useless truck, than one with low flow cooling!!
