My husband is getting ready to graduate trucking school and take his CDL A road test. We're looking in to companies to apply and are stumped on what to do. We have ruled out: JB Hunt, Maverick, Crete, Swift and Werner. We don't mind if he does OTR as long as at some point, within reason, I am able to go with him. We do need a company that offers good medical benefits and would appreciate a decent amount of pay and at least some sort of home time. I don't think we're asking for much, especially cause a lot of his classmates think they'll get big bucks doing local jobs right out of school. We're in New Jersey, if that helps at all. Please, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Need advice, please

Unless you get lucky, you won't be making good money for the first year. If possible deal with the crappy pay for 6 mo to a year for him to get some experience under his belt and then look for better paying companies. Granted there are some out there, but they are far and few between for new drivers, most want at least 1 yr experience. Good luck and I wish you the best.

you could check out epes transport. based in nc but we run a lot of jersey getting home there would be no issue and really good first year money. they only hire from certain schools so you'd have to check with a recruiter to find out if they hire from his. be advised he has to have a pretty clean driving record, background check and somewhat stable employment history though or they won't look at him. good gig for a newbie if you can get in though. check with them all they can say is no if he doesn't qualify.
hometime policy is home weekly and generally they're pretty good about it and we do have a rider policy my wife goes out with me quite a bit. nice bonus to run north of dc. I did 43k first year money which is pretty decent for my part of the countryNightwind8830 and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
The best healthcare is probably with Melton Truck Lines & they have a rider program so you can ride with him.
TMC is a good paying company.
Dynamic Transit and Holland Enterprises both require experience but do occassionally hire new CDL grduates & both have rider programs. Do the online application with them before any phone calls. Wait 3 or 4 days before any phone calls so they have something to look at when you do call.
Check Careerbuilder website also.
JBS Carriers is one to look at; he would probably be doing a lot of West Coast/Colorado runs and back to East Coast.Last edited: Oct 27, 2013

You forgot one of the other newbie truck companies. Schneider! I drive for them now and have not had any problems.I do know that they will reimburse you for your training.
Good Luck in whichever company you decide on. -
My advice is for your husband to hit the pavement and pound on some doors if he wants a good starter job. Don't get lazy and apply strictly online. Dress nice, have a copy of MVR, trucking school cert, SS card and medical card and apply in person. There are good jobs out there for rookies but ya gotta look for them. Don't go with a mega carrier unless you have exhausted all other avenues. Best of luck.
Puppage and Tonythetruckerdude Thank this. -
FedEx is hiring new cdl graduates in the northeast.. One of my classmates in training has already talked to them about it. $1000-1500 a week and home two days a week I believe. I don't know the exact location but worth looking into.

There is nothing wrong with going with a mega carrier. Like I said I drive for Schneider and I do not have to wait long between loads. Sometimes I will have three or four assignments at a time so that means NO waiting at all. The little carriers will make you wait for your next load because they don't get as many as the big guys.

I'm with CRST, the company just had a huge pay increase to something more in line with what the industry pays as a whole.
We have a train your spouse program and a 20-10 program. 20 days out, 10 straight days home, but not sure if they offer it in NJ. -
Why did you rule out Crete or sister company Shaffer. .35 cpm to start. You go with him first day out of training. Excellent benefits and a walmart regional run in ur area where he could be home everynight. Id reconsider and no im not recruiter but i am in training with them and after doing a months worth of exhaustive research they pay more than any other company unless he wants to flatbed.
blairandgretchen Thanks this.
