How can they hire you until you get to orientation to do a driving test to see if you can shift the truck?

We do try to be nice here. But, Pardel, have you read the other posts this individual has put here. 2 or 3 started about the same situation with US Xpress under different headings in the same area on the same day. People like this just like to make a "name" for themselves.
When I first came to this site, it was to seek out valid information about various trucking companies I was considering. After looking at the numerous posts and what makes up most of those posts, I do not even consider 98% of them to be of valid material for consideration. So why do I keep coming back? I have always commented about the stupidity of the stories in supermarket tabloids and could not understand how anyone could read them. Well, I think it is an addiction to entertainment. I guess I would have to say I have become addicted to the entertainment value of these posts because 99% are down right humorous to read.
Let's take the comments made about how nasty a company like Swift is. When you consider that, at any given time, Swift has in the neighborhood of 20,000 drivers and that, with turnover, in one year they may have in the neighborhood of 30 to 35,000 drivers and only 10 to 15 individuals are making comments? Let's get real about this site. While it may have been the intent of the developers of this site to make this a useful site for drivers it has become primarily a spot for a few crybabies with low work ethic to vent on companies. There are a few who come on here and give specifics about the situation (both sides) and those are useful comments. But the "this company screwed me and it was all their fault..." stories, which at least 97% of the posts are, are totally invalid.
People spreading rumors, like str8arrow did in one post until she pulled the post; people giving inaccurate facts, like trainers needing only 3 months experience when company policy states otherwise; massive misspellings and poor grammar, are all signs that the majority of the posts are this: someone is mad and types the stuff in as fast as they can and they put in as much "bad" stuff, most being lies, as they can just to "stick it to that company." Well, those of you who do this, get a clue. Those of us who are looking for serious inputs on companies to help make a real decision see right through the stupidity of your posts and so, while you may feel better for venting, your posts will not affect our decisions.
Again, the most value in this site now is entertainment. -

Well Jerryl, I will admit I did not catch the other post. I will have to go back and look for them! Could be she just wanted to make sure everyone saw her post, maybe she did not know to stay on one thread and thought she was suppose to use a new thread everytime she wanted to say something? I did not know how to do this or what a 'thread' was when I first found this site. She only has 5 post so she is probably just learning to use the site. I don't know how to use a lot of the site either. I am just clicking here and there to see what happens, or what comes up.
People like this just like to make a "name" for themselves.
Maybe not. Could be she was just hurt and wants to make sure others are not hurt as well. When one has been wronged it not only causes anger, but a deep down hurt as well. It is natural to feel the need to 'get even'. To want to strike back. Because she has a natural instinct to fight back does not mean what she is saying is not true!

I have been out here on the road for 1 year and 9 months now. As hard as it is to believe some of these stories, yes, I would say most are true.
Are you a trucker? I see you do not list yourself as one?
If you are not out here you could not possibly understand what it is like or how horribly drivers are treated by these companys. Drivers basically live a life of servitude. They are nothing more than indentured servants to a lot of these big companys. Under paid and over worked describes the average drivers life. It is really sad.
"this company screwed me and it was all their fault..." stories, which at least 97% of the posts are, are totally invalid.
After working in the industry, I think I can legitimately say, no, a lot of them are not invalid. I think most drivers will tell you, companys have one priority. The post I read that most described that priority was the trucker that lost his tranny and had to stop a truck that tordepoed out of control picking up speeds to 80 mph. I believe he was coming down a hill at the time. He had his wife and lab pup with him in the truck. When he finally got the truck stopped, (wrecked) he called into dispatch what had happened with the truck, the first question asked was "how is the freight". No concern for the driver or his wife and pup. No "was anyone injured", " or "can we do anything for you" just "how is the freight". As sad as it is this is the attitude of these companies.
when company policy states otherwise
A lot of companies have policies in place. That does not mean they stick to those policies. Some un-scrupulous companies use these policies, not as a way to protect employees, but to punish employees. When on the companies side policies can be overlooked. When on the employees side policies can (and are) used to 'get rid' of employees that ask questions, insist on running legal, argue a point, want to be paid for the work they do, ect. . .
'how nasty a company like Swift is' , only 10 to 15 individuals
Don't be fooled, go to ripoffreport and type in Swift, thousands of reports are filed. That is just the drivers that know about these sites and have filed reports. I am sure for every 1 driver that has filed there are 10 that have had the same experiences and not filed. I personally would never have known these sites exist if I had not been directed there. I'm sure the majority of people don't know of these websites existences.
massive misspellings and poor grammar
Get real, that is being petty! Most of use don't pay attention to chat spelling and grammar. So what if we make mistakes. We are truck drivers not English teachers!
while you may feel better for venting, your posts will not affect our decisions.
That is your choice. Check no further, just go out an apply for a driving position. Try Swift, you seem to like them maybe they will hire you.
Who knows maybe we will get to read your story in a few months.
the most value in this site now is entertainment
I could not agree with you more! It is very entertaining! I love this site. Especially when it has posters as positive and encouraging as you. You are a very positive person. Good luck in your driving career.

You know I came to this site looking for answers to questions I have about this industry. My hubby has been driving for only 1 year and there are lots of things we are both learning. But as I read these posts and this argumenative atmosphere..I deffo don't feel the kind of brotherhood my hubby talks about the drivers are supposed to have for one another.I could go in any chat room and feel this kind of animosity. It's kinda sad.I was hoping to find some comfort and friends here. There really is no need to insult some one.

My comment was not aimed at you pardel....

I'm going to jump right into the middle of the last couple of posts and take neither side of the issue. Having been here for quite a while, I have had a chance to evaluate a lot of the posts here about companies where the drivers are less than satisfied. And, yes, many of the posts set off my BS detector, sometimes based on the stories, sometimes based on the grammar, sometimes just based on my pure instinct.
What we have striven to do since day one is to provide a forum where within reason, people can give their views of various companies. Some people do a really great job at that, and when you read their posts you have a fairly strong belief in what they have to say. Some people blow so much hot air that you think they may be the real cause of global warming.
What you have to do is take a little bit of time, go back into that person's previous posts, and evaluate what they have said in the past and use that as a guide for the veracity of the things that they say. I happily invite people to do that in my case, and have left a trail that indicates my veracity or lack of it. In the case of a new person, who only has a few posts, then it becomes a judgement call you have to make, whether you believe them or not. In many cases, I ask myself if I were talking to this person and they told this story in a similar manner, would I believe them. In many cases, I find their views of a company or issue to be slanted to the point that I can no longer trust their input.
You have to evaluate the writer as much as you evaluate the words on the screen in front of you. I work very hard when I am writing here or elsewhere to make sure that the words that I use conbvey the image I want to get across, and I do so coolly and without dragging too much emotion into the writing. To write on the computer as if the incident were being captured in real time merely undercuts whatever arguments you might be making. Telling the story in detail, as clearly as possible, possibly even with a bit of humor makes the story much more palatable to people.
The story in question does bring up some other questions. Why a 3 year successful team would go to US Express with their reputation is beyond me. Why people with 3 years experience would allow themselves to get into such a situation brings up more questions than it answers. If you have been in the industry 3 years, you should be well aware of companies trying to push lease trucks onto people and should not be awed by that happening.
While I don't doubt that there are problem areas at US Express, I have my doubts about the incident as it was portrayed as happening. -
why is it a bad thing to be a lease employee?Don't you make more money than a company driver? And don't you get better runs than a company driver?
-
str8arrow is a troll.
-
You have a greater cashflow, but much greater expenses and risk. The companies push it because they can get the leasing drivers to pay the highly inflated truck payment, absorb any changes in fuel costs, and other costs. The companies also avoid taxes on the employee, as well as having to supply the standard health care benefits.
It is never a good idea to lease a truck from the same people who control the freight you are hauling. There are many tales (credible ones of which I believe) of drivers who get to the end of their leases and find that the freight dries up, leaving them unable to make the last payments and they lose all they have tied up into their truck.
And at any reputable company, there will be no difference in how the loads are assigned. if you work for an outfit that assigns the good loads to one group, and the less than desirable loads to another group, then you should run for the door just as fast as you can go. I've watched ou dispatch for the last 5 years where I work, and have never been able to detect any differences in the dispatching of company drivers vs owner operatiors. And that's the way it is supposed to work. -
