Latest: the pier has sunk an additional 3/4" since the bridge was first closed. Temporary supports will be installed by early November but they still don't have a timetable for when repair work will be completed and the bridge can be reopened.

I remember when this bridge was built and yes it does need to be that high. In fact there was a great deal of controversy about it being too low. In the Green Bay Press Gazette there was a cartoon with logging trucks on top of the bridge throwing logs onto a ship so it could fit under the bridge (water level used to be higher) and so the trucks would be lighter. I know it was just a cartoon, but the concerns were real at the time.
172 isn't the only thing that is getting extra traffic. The main street bridge, Main street, Webster, Quincy, University, Broadway and Mather/Velp are all seeing extra traffic. There's a lot of trucking activity that originates in close proximity to the bridge on both sides of the river. Paper mills on the east side and oil/gas, concrete and things brought in by the ships that go under that bridge on the west side -
