    So back in 98 I did what most people do - went to truck driving school, drove for 2 1/2 years, got promoted into dispatching, then management. Managed a terminal for over 12 years until last month till company closed terminal after losing a major customer (customer got bought out and moved).

    Son is in college and I'm single, so i wanna get back over-the-road.

    I've driven on-and-off for the company I was with when they were slow, but only a few miles here and there to stage trailers, nothing over-the-road.

    I've got a clean MVR and have been drug-free my entire life.

    Need to get a Fed-Med card and Haz-Mat for sure - but after that, next steps? Refresher course?

    Chinatown Thanks this.

    You might just have to go out with a trainer. Just talk to the company you want to go with and explain your situation and they will give you the steps.

    IMO, you're better off staying in administration and low management than to go out on the road. There's a lot of driver exploitation, particularly warehouse taking too long to load/unload the freight (no pay for dock delay), going through snow at reduced speed (low weekly mileage), and if you're in late 50s, you're a liability because insurance statistics show older drivers recognize and react slower to signs of potential accident factors. Wait until February when most of the snow on interstates had melted, but freight will slow down in late February and March because warehouses will tell suppliers "don't send me anything until we finish annual inventory count," meaning trucking companies will have their yards full of loaded trailers (to hide inventory to evade taxes) and all the receiving warehouses saying "not yet, we can't receive until we finish inventory count."

    Have you considered buying a truck and getting your authority or leasing to a company? Also, do you know what kind of freight/trailer you might like to pull as in open deck freight or van?

    Paschall Truck Lines in Murray, KY offers a refresher course. Many other companies have refresher courses.

    U can go 2 any school 4 a refresher class. But u may not have 2 have a refresher class because the company will start u off as a trainee but as long as u still got your cdl your ok just take test 4 haz+tanker u will be ok. I wasn't out of trk as long as u but I got my cdl in 08 I went back 2 warehousing til daughter got older I started actually driving in 2011 when my daughter was a senior. All I had 2 do was train it took couple companies to land where I am now. So good luck!!!

    Thanks for all the encouraging replies! I'll keep digging, may even take a local driving job if I can find a decent one - just nice to finally not to be responsible for 50+ drivers and taking 100+ phone calls a day, plus having to take calls 24/7. I'm not gonna go to an early grave from the stress, and if it's a crummy local job that doesn't pay much? Hey, it's just me now, I don't need much! Jam a few gears and turn up the radio :)

    Thanks again for all the ideas, and best to you all!

    I've been out since 97. I still have my CDL also. So far, nobody will recognize my time driving and requires me to get 160 hrs training. I certainly haven't talked to everybody, but so far, this is the answer I'm getting. Everyone wanted to see driving experience in less than years. {again, the ones I talked to}

    It doesn't quite make me a rookie, but I'm not far above that in their eyes. {YMMV}

    Good luck

    i feel your pain companies i talk to they tell me im disqualified or I would have to get back in truck with somebody the most I heard is 4-6wks lowest 1-2 wks. I been out trk a year come 11/14. they say I that the only reason they would consider me because it was because of injury on job the reason I been off. that's not including the companies that tell me a flat NO and I should be cleared by end of month

    man cant you just pay the money and take a refresher course at a school? I think you can do that or go thru a company and go out with a trainer. id rather go to the school.
