If you are overweight you should avoid this company. If the doctor who does all the physicals tells you that you need to be tested for sleep apnea, you are given a 3 month medical card. That isn't the problem. The problem is the cost of the test and the cost of the machine that you have to get if you have sleep apnea is 100% out of pocket. A sleep test alone is anywhere from $2000-$5000. That does not include the cost of a machine, which is $1000-$4000. The company will not pay one penny. They will not cover the cost up front and take a little bit out of your check each week, and they will not reimburse you either. If you don't get tested because you can't afford it, your physical will not be renewed and you'll have to find another job. So if you're big and poor like me, find a company that will cover the cost up front and set you up on a payment plan. National won't do that, and at $0.34 a mile, you'll never make enough in 3 months to do this on your own. You have been warned.

More and more companies are requiring to be tested for sleep abnea.I wouldn't be surprised if one day all companies will be required to give sleep abnea testing. Its a form of discrimination. So I would suggest lose the weight so you won't have to go thru this again and again.
-
It's another rule in the making. Give it time, then it will be if you snore, then you will have to wear a machine while driving that shuts the trucck off if it thinks you are sleepy. It's like that stupid radar BMW has to slow your car down, can't imagine what that will do to heavy traffic on 10 or 5 in LA or GW Bridge.

Nothing in this industry surprises me.I think Martin has sleep abnea testing.I think if companies require this then they should pay at least half for the test and machine.
-
I think if the company requires it then they should pay 100%.pattyj Thanks this.

I know things have changed at NCI over the past 10 years since I left them back in 03, but that company was going downhill then and I am sure it got worse. The Lease program is a joke and most O/O's were looking to move on.

Even a better idea. They think truckers are made of money or what. They should know truckers are paid worse then say flipping burgers, afterall they're the ones that pay us.

companies are being proactive on this, because if you have been paying attention to the fmcsa, they are going to try and make this a rule, before any one can get their CDL.
Yes its bullshi** that companies are doing this, before it's a law.
Then on the other hand, they turn around and SCREAM. there is a drivers shortage we need drivers, blah, blah, blah.
There are companies out there, that will test you and provide the cpap machine at their expense.
I think if it becomes a law, then the insurance companies, need to cover 100%. But then again, that's a whole nother mess in it self. -
I could be wrong here, but I believe that DOT is the one that requires the sleep apnea tests, not the company.
Because my neck was right at 17" and I take blood pressure medicine the DOT doc told me during my physical last year that I had to take a sleep study. Luckily the sleep study doc said that I didnt need a machine. (something I didnt know, the doc told me that everyone has very light sleep apnea)
The cost were covered by my health insurance.
BTW, most sleep labs offer in home studies. They mail a machine to your house and you do the sleep study on your own. This study isnt as accurate as the in lab, but it is MUCH cheaper and is accepted by DOT.
When I started driving, I was at Stevens. I got lucky and didnt have to do the sleep study there, but you use their lab and while you pay for the study out of pocket, they do finance the costs. -
No company is worth all the hassel because you'll quit before its all paid for anyway. So just look elsewhere.Does companies tell you about the testing before you leave your home to go to that company or do they spring it on you during orientation?
