Hey everyone,
I am new to the civilian trucking industry. I am an Army combat vet of 10.5 years with 3 deployments to Iraq between 2003 and 2008. I recently graduated CDL training school and now have a valid CDL with air brakes, double/triple and tank endorsements.
I have a misdemeanor assault charge on my record and every trucking company I have talked to are treating me like I am a mass murderer. I have NO other convictions on my record ANYWHERE.
Where or what can I do to get a job in this industry, local companies will not hire me until I have 2 years experience and the OTR people wont touch me.
Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.
Need some help

Hi William, welcome to the forum.Thank you for serving this great country of ours and Ihonor you to the fullest on this special day.May I ask what your misdemeanor consist of?
-
Thank You for your service and the sacrifices that you made.....Now here comes the truth....as best as I can tell you....Companies love to hire vets...they are driven , take command/instructions well and are ready to get back into living. But...the insurance underwriters control quite a bit of just who they will cover. trucking can and will be a very stressful job , you'll run your tail off to get to a stop...then be told to take a number and wait...then when you get to the dock they tell you the load must be put on to their "wood" (read their pallets). Then once you do that or wait til a lumper does it the checker has to come and check it in...are you seeing just how aggravating this can be...now with an assault charge already in your past "some" (not all) will be wary of your ability to maintain a good frame of mind when this goes on..and it WILL go on..frequently...so it makes it hard for them to be willing to take a chance on someone with a "history" I'm telling you this because you need to know it not because I think you can't be hired anywhere...just be ready foe lots of no we can't help you because of that charge.....Good Luck..and thanks again

How recent is this charge? And has everything been settled from it? I think it may make a world of difference if it is a charge from a few years ago, and is settled, rather than a recent one with possibly pending action.
If it is recent, you may be pretty well screwed. But if it is an old one, I would think you could find something without too much trouble. You might have to go with a smaller outfit rather than one of the majors, but that would likely be to your benefit to do anyhow.
Also, a lot of it may have to do with the way you present yourself in an interview. You are out there doing face to face interviews, I hope, rather than phone contacts or email. I know you can't do face to face all over the country, but if your perspective employer is anywhere within driving distance, that is the way to get some face time, which should help you overcome some hurdles.Tonythetruckerdude Thanks this. -
I thank you all for your support and responses. To answer some of your questions, I live in the Fort Knox area of Kentucky about 35 miles south of Louisville. The conviction happened in March of 2012 and I am on probation till March of 2014 (although I am currently trying to get this canceled). I have been in contact with TMC and they told me straight out they will not hire me until I am done with probation. I do not have a history of assault and the circumstances surrounding this incident has to do with a flashback I had and unfortunately my wife got in the middle of it and ended up on the receiving end. I plead guilty because I always own up to what I do.

Not trying to argue or say that you're a bad person there williammatse75...not inferring that at all...but according to the law YOU DO have a "history of assault"..hence the charge and the probationary period you are serving right now...that is a fact sir..sad but it is a fact...KUDOS to you for owning up to it , and trying to move forward..the fact remains that potential employer/s will see it for what it is...not the circumstances surrounding it , or why it happened. You'll have to learn just how to control those "demons" that get loose sometimes man...(been there done that , Vietnam era for me) Combat vets all deal with this in their own ways....but society/employers deal with it from a legal point of view...they see it as a potential problem "if " you go off on an idiot that pushes the wrong buttons...and they KNOW it's gonna happen...not you going off , but that idiot doing his thing...they don't want to be held liable. I'm just trying to explain the reasoning behind my 1st response to you...Not judging you at all...I've been where you are brother.....sometimes those demons are hard to control...but you must learn how to do it....Good Luck..I'll be praying that you are able to get connected and get to work!
