So I am in a dilemma. I am currently an O/O at a large well known van line making very good money 100k+ take home. I am otr and I like my job. I have an interview with US Foods soon for a local driver spot and am thinking of taking the job if offered but possibly turning it down due to the pay cut I'd receive. I could get rid of my truck easily but I don't know which option is better. I love what I do but it is stressful finding good labor and depending on others. Any insight from food delivery drivers would be great. I am 22 and looking to stay at one or the other for a long time. And I have a wife and 2 kids.

Man, in these trying economic times, I'd stay where the money is hands down but that's me. Its different stokes for different folks.

I would go to the first interview with US Foods...that will let you know whether or not to pursue...it did for me.

Interesting dilemma. How is your wife with your otr? Do you miss seeing your kids?

If it were me, and the wife and kids are ok, I'd keep going as you are. At 22, making over 100,000 per yr, if you are good with your money, you could probably retire in 15 or 20 years with plenty of money as a young man, or even keep working and build more wealth.

I have done jobs like that at US Foods, and it is physical work, every day. You will be on the bottom of seniority, which means you get the crappiest, lowest paying routes that no one wants. You also will get the crappiest truck of the fleet- that's gotta be tough, because you probably drive a palace on wheels. And when that crappy truck breaks, they will fix it when they get to it. Where I worked it took them WEEKS to fix the AC in the truck that I was driving. So for weeks I drove in 95 degree heat, unloading and getting back into a sweltering truck. That makes a 14 hour shift seem like days...

Being otr gives you alot of freedom. You would have none of that with US Foods. Where I worked, the routes were so tight that there were no breaks. You had to hustle just to get done within hours, and sometimes you didn't.

I am not saying a job with US Foods is bad, but it will be the opposite of what you are used to. Unless it is about your family, my advice is to continue doing what you are doing. Only you can decide what is right.

I miss my kids and sometimes my wife too. But we are a strong family for sure. I understand what you mean about freedom. I have complete reign over my loads, schedule and how hard I want to push. I love moving furniture and don't want a job where seniority is key. Thank you fld. As for palace on wheels, I think I will buy a nice one in a few years. I almost have my kids college fund paid for and then I'm saving up for a small house in cash. Right now I drive a 99 freightliner fld120 that cost me 12k. Awesome cummins N14 though, but not roomy or very pretty. And at home I have a 94 Chevy cavalier although that may change soon. Thanks for the input everyone

Hey just another thought. Maybe you could run regional or something like that to be closer to home. I don't know if you are looking to get your authority or any of that, but it is possible that you could find a good compromise between money and home time, and still have your freedom and do what you like. This is the place to ask. Good luck.

I would tell you to go to the interview and if offered take the job with US Food serv. I will tell you this that Food Service is WORK, Physical WORK, driving is just a small part sorta like peddling local LTL

Why give up being your own boss to go work for someone especially when you seem to be doing good..Work hard while you cn, and save all you can. Id say dont do it..Run hard for a few years while the going is good. Going to work for US Foods like posters above said is seniority based. At the bottom, yoll run crappy routes, hump hundreds of cases of product and cover vac/sick days, subject to being on call.. I'm not exactly sure if Food Service is exactly lke LTL, but if it is, I woud say you wouldnt be the smartest person if you did that. But only you can ultimately decide.

I wish there were a better balance. There just isn't a vast enough market in hhg to do regional
