it is an ecm reprogram that has to be done, companies tell the dealers/manufactoring co. how they want the trucks programed all it takes is checking or un-checking a couple boxs and the truck will idle all day long, this just shows you how much your company likes you, let you burn in the summer and freeze in the winter, all the while they are in the office or at home all confy

What about finding a better job were you could be treated like a human? I wont let my dog and cat sleep out side at 31 and I don't like ether one of them much.

Go to the Diesel Doctor Exit 159 in Effingham Illinois he can turn it on to idle.

By the OP's own admission he is tired of waking up freezing so I assumed he was restarting it once or twice a night. Using the old 1 gal an hr. and assuming $4.00 a gal and assuming its is idling 1-2 hrs. a night total. The amount of idling was not my point, my point was that on top of sacrificing his comfort, they are ruining their equipment just to save pennies (by comparison) in fuel. An APU will solve most of the problems here but that was not part of the original question. The original question was how to get the truck to idle, and I gave my opinion based on my own personal experience. That is all it was, not a math test.

There has to be a way to create a far less expensive initial investment for creating a comfortable inside temperature when sleeping without idling. As some companies look at the initial cost of APU's and figure they can't recapture that cost within the 3 year use within their own fleets, they then opt to ask drivers to get along with Webasto heaters for cold weather (which are great) and with a fan and open windows during hot weather.
I've never seen any trucks using solar panels, and to me the falling cost of panels would make that an interesting option for embedding in the faring on top of the cab. Plenty of surface area to charge batteries.
With more and more municipalities and customers with no-idle policies or laws we need to come up with some way of being creative for powering AC and heat without burning diesel. -
Talk to your company about getting it done, or help buyin an electric heater and a strong enough enverter to power it.

So none of the tricks have worked to keep my truck running. Last night however, my truck stayed on when it hit 30 degrees.
-
when mine gives the idle shutdown warning, I blip the throttle and it cancels, can idle as long as I want

Depending on the year of the truck when a company will buy there truck which mega carriers buy new an APU will always raise the resale value, as far as I know of there is no company out here that will get rid of there equipment in 3 years if bought new and the fuel savings at a fleet level will help pay for the APU in it's self. If you drive for a company that only buys used equipment and sells in 3 years, maybe it's time to look for another company to drive for....

Someone stealing additional fuel is believeible but a far fetch. I prefer the old did you idiots check the weather? K was bucking a 40mph head wind all day with your gutless POS yea that 6.25mpg flatland with no wind goes to hell real quick when you have to drop a gear and keep it on the governor to cruise 63. That usually shuts them up. Idling for 10 hours should only burn about 15-20 gallons of fuel depending on engine speed. If the mega carriers can't afford to pay for the extra fuel they should ask the customer for a little more money just my opinion.
