I can make a strong case for the fact that after downloading FREE custom POI (points of interest) database files from http://www.poi-factory.com/ that my driving has been more enjoyable, efficient, and best of all safer.
I've downloaded the following POIs that are invaluable for a GPS, especially a truck specific GPS like the one I own:
- Truck/RV fuel Stations (all the major truck stops such as Pilot/Flying J, Love's, etc.)
- Weigh Stations - USA (extremely thorough)
- Independent Truck Stops (Shell, Exxon, mom and pop, etc.)
- Rest Areas Combined (every rest area in the US)
- Low Clearance Underpasses (contains about 2500 locations)
I'm sharing this information for 2 reasons: 1) I like to help other drivers and I believe in the importance of these files for more safe and efficient trucking, and 2) the more people who download and use these files, then perhaps update them by submitting new/corrected entries back to The POI Factory website, the more thorough and accurate these files will be for me as well as others. It's a win-win for everyone!
Cheers, and safe driving!

Trucking Jobs in 30 seconds
Every month 400 people find a job with the help of TruckersReport.

If they were free, i'd download them.
-
Then start downloading. They are free, that was mentioned. All you gotta do is register which is free. Then start downloadiing.
-
Haven't had a problem making my own. I started a thread on this a couple weeks ago. Easy enough to do.
-
My suspicion is, however, that any GPS that comes stock with these POIs cannot possibly be as up to date or as thorough as the ones found on TPF. The work involved with maintaining these POIs are incredible and I can't imagine any company staying on top of their databases since they are always changing. And time is money which affects their bottom line.

Anyone using the red-light camera paid POI's?
-
there are apps for that. been out for years now.
droidtruckerstop will tell you weight stations on your route. along with the major truckstops.
mydat will tell you walmarts, rest areas. truckwashes, cat scales. fuel prices, repair services, and hotels 4 trucks.
none of them make me safer and more efficient. being awake and keeping eyes on the road does that. -
FYI when you use garmins poi loader you can set up proximity alerts when u load the poi files.
