    Hello ppl,

I am not sure if I am on right place to post this question.

I have a friend working at the small company doing AUTO JOBS , mostly CALI to EAST coast.

so I am thinkin to buy a truck ( used one) and hire a driver to drive for me.

And to the point, my question is doe it actually make monney?

My friend is just a dispatcher at the company but he is saying estimate for one trip ( back and forth) comes about $14000~16000 and it takes about 15days.

So total come up to $28000~32000 as gross income.

From total gross income, I have to pay , gas , insurance , 10~15% to company, maintaince, pay to driver and income tax ( I am 27 years and single )

By just calculating the fees that I have to pay, I still get a lot of probit left.

But, I googled and read many thread and there are many ppl saying ,they just barely make money to live.

If there is any driver who actaully doing this job or have some idea .

Pleaes reply. It will help me alot.

Thank you and have a nice day.

After being burned working for others who had No trucking experience I advised do not do it. Save your money. You will find it a money pit and end up going out of Business fast and lose out big time. Rarely someone can go out and buy a truck and make it. Can be done but it is rare. Lot more than what you have listed involved.

That amount of gross revenue might be for the top driver who has been there a long time. Or the independent who has his own customers and puts it all together himself. Don't count on just getting in the game and having that much revenue coming through the door. It will take a heck of a lot to learn the game, then to refine it and make it work best for your situation. Experience by trial and error is hugely expensive ...

Also keep in mind, if a trip is 15 days you really think you would average 2 per month? The driver might as well not have a house or a car if he wants to run that. Likely he will want a few days or a week off between runs. This also drives down your gross monthly revenue. Doing the longer runs you have to put out more in fuel, tires, driver pay, etc., before you have signed paperwork THEN the waiting game to be paid begins.

There are consortiums that you pay a fee to, about 100 bucks a year, and they pull random names for a drug test. OOIDA has a group you can get in, and it meets all the government's rules and regs.
When they pull your name, you go ASAP for a drug test. They can supply nearby locations if you are on the road.

I would bow my head, & and become a driver. If you use drugs, your better suited elsewhere. A Steady hand, & a clear mind is needed for this job. I have hauled many loads out of the Magic Valley in Texas. Pee in a cup, don't pass, get banned.

Join OOIDA; check their website. It's a business organization for owner-operators and small fleet owners.

Your first post mentioned buying gas instead of fuel for the truck so I'm guessing that you don't know anything about trucking and most likely would get eaten alive if you started this.

...but, even a blind pig finds an acorn every now and then.
