light trailer advisory// only have 12k on, but weather station says 40-45mph

Take it slow and easy during daylight as the others posts mentioned , if you wait and the snow hits then your dealing with snow wind and it will be dark . The underslung lift gate adds some weight to the rear of the trailer as well .

 

Once you get to Laramie, you can get on US 30 and bypass Elk Mountain. That is where you'll really encounter the wind gusts.

 

Is it a partial load where all 12k is on the floor and not stacked. If that is the case it will lower your center of gravity some. There are some great suggestions on this thread but the bottom line is you know you best and only you know what your limits and capabilities are, If you are comforatable driveing then drive, If you are not comftorable then pull over and wait until you are. Alot depends on what you are used to, someone that grew up in Montana is not nearly as nervious about winter weather as much as someone who grew up in dallas, someone who grew up on long island is not as nervous driveing there as someone who was raised in northern maine. It all boils down to your experiance, skill, and gut feeling. Punctuallity is a big concern in the trucking buisness but your saftey and the saftey of others trumps punctuality every time . I pulled a 53' dry van thru there empty once, 50+ mph gusts according to DOT.

had to change my underpants a couple times.

Drive steady, no sudden steering adjustments, fight the wind but don't fight too hard or you'll be on your side.

I drove across the Oklahoma and texas panhandle the other day fighting a constant 25-30 mph crosswind with gusts near 40. Had 15k in the box. Managed to keep her upright and in my lane most of the time, lol. Just keep you attention on what the wind is doing, you'll feel it and respond accordingly.
