So, my question is, when you drop off a load, is there usually a point person that you meet at the drop off location and that you get the BOL signed from or can you usually get it signed from anyone there? Is there usually one person or multiple individuals? What information is given to you about this person? What if that person is not there?

There is almost always a "point person" at a receiver. On rare occasions I've dropped a trailer in a secure drop lot when there is nobody there, but then leave the paperwork in the front of the trailer box and keep a copy.

Each customer will have their own procedure. Often it is the guard at the guard shack to enter the yard that will sign off on the BOL, sometimes it is someone in the office, or you have to go to a designated person in their receiving department. Every circumstance is different, so make sure you ask questions and are clear what is expected of you.

Thanks! Even if every customer's point person is different, do you usually know who the point person is ahead of time? Do you have this persons phone number?

    Skydivedavec Thanks this.

all depends how many in receiving and how big place going to. Just call and ask a lot of questions till you get answers you need and looking for. I do for any i don't know about.

Do most of the loads you haul have a point person at the receiver?

There is usually a receiving department. In that department could be 1 or 100 people. There is usually a window, desk, or signs directing you to whomever receives. In 999 times out of 1000, you will not have a name of a particular person. And surely not their personal phone number.
You may or may not have a phone number to the receiving department of the company/place you are delivering. Every situation can be different.
Point person is a term used by office types in corporate situations and is not a term used in trucking.
Receiver, shipper, any idiot on the dock. Now those are terms we use.

You dont really have to worry about who you deal with at the receiver, as long as theres some signature scribble on your copy of the bill. Majority of the places have a receiving dept. or someone goofing around on the fork lift on the dock, in some places you only deal with the security guard because office people dont want to deal with the rude smelly truck drivers.
