What is a very reputable CDL school in the Tampa, Orlando, or Ocala area? We do not have any money to pay for the schooling and we don't want to get ripped off having to sign up for a school which chains you to an employer that you now owe you first born to because they paid for your schooling. Just share with me safe schools and good schools in the area. Thank you!

PTEC in St. Petersburg. But if you don't have any money for tuition and you don't want to sign with a company, why ask about training? I'm just curious.

How's your credit? There are student loans if you qualify.Staying with a company is not bad if you shop around. Many do quit after a few short months only to go with another company and then quit them because they were worse then the first company. So in other words stay a yr get the exp and look elsewhere. As a new cdl holder you're not going to find the perfect ideal starter company.Trucking is trucking, they're not in busness to make friends with drivers or make them happy.Their main goal is MONEY.They could care less about the drivers and could care less if you quit.Does'nt matter where ya go you can either making trucking a fun time or your worst nitemare but companies will not bend over backwords for you.Say you did attend a school, how you going to pay that back if you don't stay awhile with a trucking company.Which by the way companies will reimburse you for the schooling if that company supports the school. But here comes the attached string, you have to be with that company for so long before the reimbursement kicks in.

There are lots of good schools in the area.

    Orlando Area:

    Mid Florida Tech

    Tampa:

    PTEC

There are others around. I would PM member Xlsdraw and ask where he went to school. He went somewhere around the Lakeland area.

Ok, here is what the recruiter from TCI or TDI in Sanford told hubby, that the company he goes to work for after he gets his CDL that the company pays for it and there is not contract to be signed between him and company. He asked the recruiter so what if I quit in two months he said nothing would happen. He was also told he will start off making .35 a mile and home at nights. So what do we believe?

True, nothing would happen if you quit.Drivers quit less time then 2 months. But the company will not pay for your schooling either.Call some of these starter companies and ask them about their reimbursement program. You do not have a contract that is true but to receive the full reimbursement you still have to be with that company a yr.Think the reimbursement starts like after 3 maybe 6 months with them.If you're serious about trucking you need to be more thoural with the questions you ask the recruiters. They ARE NOT going to give out any extra info on their own free will.Recruiters are sales ppl and get paid on commission so like politicians, they are going to only say what you wanna hear, not the truth.

How is that supposed to work? TDI is going to float the money up front for the CDL? Doesn't sound right but if they put it in writing/a contract then it's fine but I'd ask the company itself assuming they have one in mind who they are going to place him with.

I would get EVERYTHING in WRITING just to be on the safe side. Normally when you to go a school like Swift has you sign a contract saying that you owe x amount of money for a period of x amount years. Its there in writing and if you leave after two months, you subtract what you paid from total owed. You now get the total owed. Just letting you know how it goes for a company sponsored school.

I am looking at Career Tech in Tampa, they also have courses offered in Lakeland. It is a 160 hr program or 300+ hr program. I spoke with David there and tuition is $1500 down to start with the rest financed at 0% intrest. He also told me I could start with $750 down and then $750 due before graduation. They will work with you to get you hired by a company that offers tuition reimbursement. They have day/night/weekend classes. Here is the website

    Hope this helps
