US Xpress above 70 and below 40. Bunk heater. No APU. They never said anything about idling.
I like it cold when I sleep. Would not ever want to not idle during the summer time. Opening the windows can't replace a chilly truck.

Thats called the cost of doing business. If i decide to start an airline, should i complain that the pilots are using fuel ?? Its trucking, its our homes. If the companies were worried about fuel costs, they should have spent the extra bit in the beginning for APUschopper103in and Numb Thank this.

I drive for a small expedite carrier. We can idle whenever we see fit and we've never been told we can't idle at any specific time. They will usually provide a hotel room in the summer if the heat is bordering on the extreme/uncomfortable. We also have Webasto bunk heaters that work quite well but no APU. I'm in a '05 387 tandem axle straight. You won't see many (if any) of them around. I was told it was the only one Paccar ever made but I really don't know if that's a true statement.

At TransX we can idle as much as we like. They encourage you not to idle when it's warm, but in very cold weather, a lot of our trucks can be seen idling in the yard. Fuel is cheap compared to losing a life. Many of our trucks have the Thermo King diesel APU's. Some have just battery units, though.
I have the diesel unit, and I rarely idle the truck. -
Actually, the companies need to pass on the cost, like they do with everything else.
So if you pull a $100k - $250k valued load for 1 day and the industry can't afford $50 to let you sleep in reasonable temp that night? Pass on the cost to the consumers if they want their product so badly.RizenPhoenix Thanks this. -
You mean pilots are sleeping in the plane and idling? Never heard of that...123456 Thanks this.

Central ref. Is less then 30% idle policy , we have bunk heater though . No apu's
Our trucks for the most part have opti idle, and a 5 min timmer . However all ya have to do is start the truck and turn on the cruise , and the timer will not shut the truck off .
If ya really think about all the hours the truck runs in a days time 30% idle is a decent amount . -
Watsontown has a 45% on rigs with no APU. Which basically means shut your truck off when your not in it and your good. And that is based off idling for a 10hr plus a couple more, and will still keep you in the fuel bonus.

I drive a '09 Mack CXU 613, MP8 Mack engine, we also have 3 '12 models, same engine, and took delivery yesterday of 2 '14 Mack's same engine. All came with a factory setting for engine cool down to protect the turbo and emissions system, it's based on exhaust, DPF, oil and coolant temps. When I turn the key off, if the computer reads temps in any or all or a combination of these are too high, it will not shut the engine down, and will continue to idle till it senses that it's cool enough, then it will shut off. I've had it shutdown after 2 minutes and I've had it take up to 10 minutes. It creates real problems if I'm coming straight off the highway into a customer or the rail and need to shut the truck off right away.
