Thanks Cowpie. I had googled "davco" and got all sorts of stuff but not this.

 

- You hear all about filtration systems with extra pumps and multiple extra filter, well every one that I ever worked on with that type of system was junk, they are mounted in the frame usually behind the fuel tanks because there is no room anywhere else and are open to all the spray. They usually use the same filters as the truck does so you end up with changing 4 filters. I removed about a dozen systems with extra pumps and filters because they failed. It was a great idea that just does not work.
The Davco system works great. We use to service trucks that went 22 hours a day, 2 shifts, 5 days a week, pulling 144,000 lbs up and over the Chokahalla, Port Kells, to Westbank. The ones with the Davco systems changed the filters once a year and had no fuel related problems. They drained the water out once a week, about a cup of fuel with maybe an ounce of water, a little dirt.

Once a year? You guys must have some really clean fuel up there, the last truck I owned that had a Davco on it, would go two oil changes before it needed to be changed.

 

This was about 7 years ago and the filtration was the 10 micron. with the 6 and 2 it would be a lot less. they found that unless the filter was completely covered, at an oil change they would wait till the next one. some of the units had vacuum guages on them and it did not seem to make a difference. The filter has such a large surface area that it justs filters to a finer level.

I know this is an old thread but I did a search for the Wix 33406 fuel water separator which is what I'm running and thought I would ask a question about it and see if I get a response. This is the first time I've used this filter with the standpipe built into it and it doesn't drain the way the others do. When I open it a little water came out an then nothing. Is that right? The others have all drained fuel after the water but this drained a little water and quit. Is mine acting correctly or is it not working correctly. I did it with the motor turned off.

 

I run a Baldwin 596(I think that's right) for the primary and a 7587 for the secondary. Never had any issues with Baldwin filters since I started using them about 10yrs ago.

 

Today I figured out exactly how this filter Wx 33406 works. Its got a standpipe in it and when you unscrew it it does nothing until you pull the end down about an inch then it drains like crazy. Never seen one do that. I replaced it with a Wix 33405 and going to see how that works out. I use Baldwins on my ISX Cummins but never have on the Cat.

 

Cutting filters open tells the whole tale. I did that once, and i've had nothing but yellow filters on my yellow engines since 1981.
