depending on your part of he country, typically intermodal is 100% no touch or drop/hook, pay can vary depending on the area, but $12 to $16/hr to start is about the norm. But, unless it's company wide, don't expect to only work Monday thru Friday, 1/2 the year that's what I do is 5 days a week, the other half of the year I work 6 days a week, not uncommon to work 10 to 13 hrs a day for 14 days straight.

Iv only done been driving a little while like in training still and you could not be more right about it being hard work. At 8 hours your wanting the next 3 hours to hurry up. There are times I stop do my post trip and paper work and just fell out. You so tired when your new food is secound nature then you wake up hungry as crap. And only hope to have time for eating. My dad has become my hero through this experience, he has been a driver 40 years and made it look so simple its not

Sorry but I've got to chime in here. All the guys coming on here and telling wannabe's how hard trucking is and it's the toughest thing ever......well, I gotta say, if you are making it that hard you are doing something wrong. Sorry, but it's true. Trucking is not rocket science. Like ANY job, you get out of it what you put into it. If you constantly #####, whine, complain and aren't happy, then to you, trucking is the toughest thing out there. If you are happy doing what you are doing, don't mind the day to day pains in the butt then trucking is not very difficult.

And to the guy looking for no touch, home weekends. Don't be scared away by the doomsday truckers. There are jobs out there like that, you just have to hunt, hunt, hunt to find them. They won't come looking for you. I run 100% no touch, home every night, weekends optional. And I make good money. Good enough in five days that I don't need to work weekends but occassionally throw in a Saturday evening for some extra dough. Also I have no forced dispatch, take only what I want. The good jobs are out there, some are just too lazy to find them. Good luck to the OP.

Beware of the "home on weekends" ads. They make you think that you will go home Friday Evening, and leave out Monday morning, but home on the weekends in the trucker world means 34 hours off whenever you get in on a late Saturday night or Sunday afternoon which means you leave on Tuesday or do an 8 day until next weekend.

I have to agree with DGman to some degree. I too, have a little tater job. I just stumbled up on it & fate just handed it to me. I am no touch freight, home most nights & every weekend.. Saturday & Sunday.... & the pay for my rural area in the south, isn't too bad. Sometimes I only work 4 or 5 hours a day. Sometimes I work 12 - 14 hours a day. But I do not get extra pay to sit in the truck while being loaded or unloaded etc.

There are jobs like this out there but are few & far between. They aren't plentiful in the trucking industry. Most trucking jobs are from can to cant & then some. I doubt seriously, that anyone on here (in the trucking industry) will know of any open positions like your asking for. First, if a position like that comes available, they aint gonna tell anybody else about it, cause they're gonna be down there trying to get the job themselves. I know I didn't take out an ad when I seen this job I have advertised & I didn't waste anytime getting on the phone to get an interview set up ASAP.

I do have to respectfully disagree with a couple of posts though about being on the dock counting boxes as they are loaded or unloaded. I have a couple of places I go to that will tell you very quickly that you can not be on the dock. You must stay in your truck or in the truckers lounge etc, etc. I have been run out of one place that I went into, just to see how they were coming along. Another place told me very quickly, I couldn't be on the dock & to stay in the truck until unloading was complete, then they would bring me my paperwork. I do understand what your saying but, what do you do? I know your responsible for items received etc & the items you sign for. But, when it's private property, they have the last say. Just like at your home, your private property, you have the right to tell aunt Suzie's boyfriend he cant get out & he has to stay in the car. Its the same thing. If he does get out, you can call the police & have them take care of the situation whether it be trespassing or whatever, etc. You cant always just bounce out like you own the place & tell them what you're gonna do when its their property.

I'm regional, home every night, off every weekend, avg 3200mi/week, and 100% no touch freight but you're a little too far to get hired where I work. Those jobs are out there but you will have to find a smaller carrier and good luck with that if you don't have much experience.
