If someone were checking FB (facebook) while they are driving, especially a trucker, I would vote for firing them on the spot.
You actually wrote as if this would be an acceptable thing to do while driving. I couldn't disagree any stronger.
You claim this is a "safer" method. Their head may be "pointed forward" but your eyes still have to focus off center, on the display itself.

How about just doing what your job is supposed to be.. driving a 70k-80k truck. Without any dire need to check FB, emails, movies, or whatever.
It's not a choice between looking down vs pointed forward,, an unnecessary distraction is an unnecessary distraction.

Well, I believe that ALL these electronic devices are a distraction for the driver, cell phone, ipad, ipod, even a radio... You can tell that as you operate these things your attention get shifted, which I believe can be a "ONE" second mistake that would kill someone.

I agree 100% with KW Cajun... Our truck is a KILLER machine when we are not doing our job properly with all the precaution and safety measures. What it is the need for someone to be checking any status on Facebook or Twiter or whatever while operating a big Machine such as a Tractor Trailer?

    KW Cajun Thanks this.

Heck, I don't even have a Blutooth for my phone at this time! Phone is off, chucked in the sleeper until I stop for my break or to handle loading/unloading. Only downside is that my dispatcher does a fair amount of business on the phone (she prefers the one on one experience of actually talking to her drivers rather than texting). So I am considering getting that Cobra 29 with the Blutooth setup for a CB, which is another thing I don't currently have in my truck.

Honestly can't say I miss the CB all that much, either. But I guess it's handy to have with the weather getting progressively crappier.

I am not arguing the point one way or the other but for the sake of the subject at hand.... I'm putting some questions out there. (If a mod feels this is a bit off topic or hijacking the thread & wants to put it in its own thread & referencing it back to this thread.. I don't have problem with that)

My understanding is for example, a truck driver can not have a laptop in the driving area of the truck while being operated. Yes? No?

While a laptop & cell phones cant be used while driving, GPS units are allowed. Yes? No?

If GPS units are allowed, what about those of us who use Microsoft Streets & Trips GPS software..... on our laptops?
I would think a 15" screen is much safer & takes less time to look at than one of those little bitty 3, 4 or 5" screens. Yes? No?

I have been using my laptop for my GPS unit since 2005 & while being checked at DOT check stations, weigh stations & road side inspections, I have never been questioned by any officer whether DOT or State Police/Hwy Patrol etc.

But, are we violating the rule by having a laptop in the driving area... "in view of the driver"?
