When you say "you will work harder", what is that referring to? Why is flatbed trucking harder than reefer's (for example)?

Because you have to tarp and untarp the load. But most companies will give you a tarp fee.Siberius and blairandgretchen Thank this.

Got it.
Definitely this is something I'd be interested in. One of the reasons I'm getting back into trucking is to get back into shape after years in a sedentary job.
This place is like a goldmine of information like this.blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
That right there is a statement you DO NOT hear often on TTR or associated with the trucking industry, period. I cannot imagine a job that is MORE sedentary than this industry, where you sit for 11 hours a day.blairandgretchen and skellr Thank this.

Not every truck driver drives 11 hours and sits all day. I can imagine a lot of jobs that are much more sedentary than mine.

You wanna get ambulatory and walk a lot? Go to work in retail for Home Depot or Lowe's: your feet will want to choke you after a week.blairandgretchen Thanks this.

...where you can sit for up to 11 hours per day while driving.
Better? Certainly is more accurate but it doesn't change the facts of a person being relatively immobilized and confined to a small space doing limited physical activity for extended periods of time.
Sure you can go to the trailer and throw chains, tarps, hoses, or boxes and climb up, down, and around on ladders of other devices to extended your reach or height. You can even push, pull, tug, or tow heavy items of increased resistance (moving converter dollies to position a set of of doubles, for example) but all of that would come secondarily to the primary function of a driver, which, oddly enough, is to drive. And that must be done while buckled in a seat in the sitting position. For a period of time not to exceed 8 hours without a 30 minute obama break. And without exceeding 11 hours of said function. And without exceeding 14 hours of an array of functions without taking a 10 hour break. -

There is more to life than money; there is self-respect too. You could probably make more money as, say, a shift manager in a fast food joint, but would you still be able to look yourself in the mirror?
The first year as a driver, you won't make squat, but you will be a TRUCK DRIVER!
There is something to be said for that.
Now then; someone will come along in a minute and brag about how much they made in their first year, just starting out, but for most of us, the first year's take-home checks are, um, "severely modest".
I prefer to think of of my current wages as "apprenticeship wages" (and I remind myself that after one year, I'll make the big bucks!)HauntedSchizo19 Thanks this. -
