I've been reading a lot on this forum and a couple others over the past several days and have talked to CDL instructors at two different colleges and got a callback today from a Roadmaster recruiter, and I'm trying to weigh both the pros and cons of non-company courses versus company courses. Of course I realize that if I get trained by a company I'll have an obligation to that company for probably a year and little schedule flexibility during that time, which concerns me because my wife is disabled (she has spina bifida) and has mobility issues which would make it difficult for me to be gone for extended periods of time (versus getting local or regional loads), but I don't want to shortchange myself in the long run if this is the career route I decide upon. So I guess I'd like to pick everyone's brains on how I can figure out how to get started and who to get started with, and any other considerations I may not be seeing yet as a newbie. Any advice would be appreciated.
Should I take a CDL course at a college, or get trained by a trucking company?

Take a CDL course at a college & aquire all the endorsements. This route you're more likely to get a local or regional job and be home more.

In which state and City are you at?
I suggest, go to a Truck Driving School, in less than THREE weeks you will going to have your CDL in hands.
College? will be about SIX months, or maybe more...Skydivedavec Thanks this. -
Chinatown is right BUT will take a lot longer... to have the actual CDL ...

But do potential employers have a bias toward drivers who have been trained by carriers, or do they just look at the driver's skill and driving record? I would love to be home more but also don't want to shortchange myself if a CDL course would be viewed less favorably by potential employers.

I'm in west-central Indiana, about an hour from Indianapolis.

Before you do any of it....
Get 2 or 3 pre hire letters -
I'm not sure I understand what you mean by pre-hire letters.

Really? What colleges do you know of that have a six month truck driving course? Most I ever saw was 8-10 weeks.
Truck yeah, your decision has a lot to do with what potential employers you are looking at. Some will require their training program, some may require a program with a specific number of hours and others may require it to be a program at an accredited college. You need to take a serious look at what type of driving you are prepared to do and what companies in your area can offer that. -
I am in the same quandary about whether to go to company school or community college. I will be watching to see where this goes! I do know that with a company school, you either are locked in for a year or more or you will wind up paying them back if you left. With a CDL in hand, you can come and go without the penalty of paying for your education.
