I would appreciate hearing from anyone as to a situation I have encountered while working for my current employer. I am a truck driver for Try Hours, an expediting company out of Maumee, Ohio. The company could not get me home on time so I had to pay $160 for a bus to take me from Gary, IN to my home in Brandon, FL to see my wife after being out for almost 3 months on the road. This left my partner (who suggested the idea) with the truck as the load we were assigned to could not deliver till Friday Nov 22, when we got to the Ford Plant in Chicago on Nov 18th. I waited with my partner for 3 days before going home. We were told we could deliver the load early. After waiting for Ford to unload the trailer, they sent him back out to California, where we picked up the load, with pallets. So I'm home and my partner, who I spoke with last night, was in Oklahoma (he lives in FL, with family in Georgia) working his way to Detroit, MI, but has been getting delayed due to bad weather. Now the situation, my boss asked my partner, not me, if he thought it was possible for me to provide my own transportation to Detroit and meet him. Mind you I don't get paid well with this company, I do okay, but financially I"m not in a position to put out $200-400 to get myself to Detroit. I can't speak to my boss till Monday, and my partner informed them that I probably would not want to do it. I would like to see my partner get home. What do you think I should do?

I READ THRU THE POST A COUPLE TIMES still cant get my mind around all the twists. You both live in Florida but your trying to get to Detroit to meet? Anyway trying to figure out why youre dedicated to this co? Sounds bad cant get you home for the whole summer? Meet in Indiana and Detroit? Pay your own way home.? You must like working with your friend or bad driving history keeping you dedicated? Maybe just trying to get experience? Poor Pay? Just my thoughts. I would make sure my buddy gets home 1st then I would get home and immediately secure job at a better co that can get you home more often and pays more. I mean 3 months out. Come on. JMO

I would'nt work for someone that can't get me home at least close to the day I requested so I paid for my way home. Now he wants you to meet up in Detroit and you pay for way there.Sounds like too much sitting with this company.Your boss already knows he'll be sitting awhile if he wants you to meet him in Detroit and you in Florida. How long of a ride is that? You've been doing this company a huge favor staying out so long,he should furnish transportation.

Forgot to add: What about both of you or you getting a local trucking gig in Florida? Be home every night maybe? Wouldnt have to drive in sh...y weather. Ive delivered to Ford at Claycomo Mo plant .Sucks. Always a cluster waiting around dealing with( the guard shack guy with the Indiana Jones fedora hat) . You take the master bar codes in there with you and he still doesnt know what docks to send you to?

Thank you, however I went to the sight and the nearest one is Orlando, though not far it didn't seem to offer me a trip to Detroit, MI only from Orlando, Jacksonville, or Gainsville to one of these 3 destinations. This may only be in Florida, but that was the only choices it provided.

I just checked Alligent and the earliest flight is 12/12, which doesn't do me any good, but again thanks at least I now know another place to check for low air fare.

We wanted to stay out that long, but I just needed to be home the week before Thanksgiving, anytime up to Sunday of that week as my wife and I booked a resort for Monday. Its just that after speaking to my boss, he stated he didn't know I wanted to be home and I was told by the company they have to pay for their gas to get home every night so I needed to pay for my own way home if I wanted to go home. It would have cost me $150 to change the date and had to be used by the end of the year, and I had no guarantee I would be home, in fact as it looks now I made the best decision as I would probably have had to change the date more than once.

Thank you that's what I thought, just feel bad for my co-driver as he should be able to get home too.

You took it on your own to leave the truck so it should be on you to get back. On the other hand your boss should have FL loads or he shouldn't of hired you guys.

I wouldn't be making plans like you've done. They can easily turn sour. I once made plans to meet my ex on the road 6 months in advance. I bought her a plane ticket, reserved a motel room and and a rental car. Come the day to go there after two months on the road I was pointed the other way. I got there just in time to take her back to the airport 4 days later. Though extremely mad it taught me a lesson. Nothing is a sure thing when on the road. Don't make them type plans unless it's vacation time.

As bad as it seems you should of sucked it up and stayed with the truck.

It's time your partner gets hometime. Have your boss get him home and you all meet up there.

Like others said I would be considering a new employer.

There is a big Walmart distribution center in Arcadia, FL. Find a carrier that feeds them and you'll have no problem getting home. I use to run meat out of the midwest down there all the time. If you live in FL pulling a reefer is your best bet.
