Schneider - New CDL Driver Questions

    My husband went to trucking school, graduated last month and got his CDL Class A license. We've applied to numerous places (and he got call backs) but have found fault in most of them, not just petty things either. He got an offer from Schneider, but we couldn't get past the 6 months out before I can go with him, so we passed. Unfortunately, things aren't looking good and we think we may need to go to Schneider. Honestly, the time frame for the rider policy was the only thing keeping us away. We talked about it and think we need to look past that, for now, but now that I look again I'm hearing they start out at $0.29cpm and that really scares us. We're not asking for a lot, because we know everyone has to start somewhere, but we're a little worried, because his income is what we will rely on.

    Any information you could please provide would be great. We're in NJ and he applied for a Northeast route, but was told he would only do orientation in Pa, but his run would be in the South. Please help! Thank you. :)

    PS - He currently has no passport, TWIC or endorsements but IF he had to get any of those he would. He also has a preference for no flatbeds, at least to start out, hence the reason behind no Melton

    Check these companies with rider program:

    Paschall Truck Lines
    Ozark Motor Lines
    National Carriers
    M. Bjorn Peterson Transportation
    Dynamic Transit

    One important thing a new driver should do is ignore "experience required" and apply anyway. Many companies sometimes bend their own rules and hire new CDL grads but don't advertise it. Do the online application & follow with a phone call in a couple of days.

    Edit : I don't know if NFI Industries in New Jersey has a rider program, check the website. They do hire new CDL graduates.

    If you have financial obligations and your husband is the only sourse of income, better reconsider and broaden your options. Melton pays really well annually avg. $50K and he can make that and more with tanker. At the very least, get all the endorsements, TWIC, passport because with 12 months experience you will have many, many more choices.

    Maverick pays very well, but don't know about the rider program.

    Crete/Shaffer...you go from day one...after he does 8 weeks of training. My wife is with me. Has been from day one. .35 cpm and there is a walmart regional run up there in northeast....jersery, pa, ny, and de...has chance to be home every night or other night....no nyc

    By the time your husband get all his training time will fly by 6months is nothing to us half the time i don't no what day it is if its not my delivery or pick up i keep a calendar stuck on my dash and sometimes i still have to think what day it is i think about mostly not getting in a ditch or gettin ran over by 4wheelers happen twice. Be patient most people don't stay with starter companies. Pick any of one's mentioned get the experience and either stay or move on. So no worries on the time thing but he need to go ahead and sign with starter company he don't want much time to go by before he goes to train if he does companies will pass up on his application because of time passed from when he graduated and actually passed before applying i went thru it i graduated in 08 didn't drive till 2011 because had to wait til child got lil older i landed at cr England a student mill so pick quickly.

    My biggest concern is the starting CPM. How true is it that they start you at less then 30?

    I just received a Pre Hire from Schneider out of NJ for 38 cents a mile. That's OTR tanker division and you have to live within 30 miles of Keasbey, NJ to qualify. That's the best opportunity I could find out of NJ for a new driver.
    Most, probably 95%, of trucking companies start new CDL holders less than 30 cents a mile. Crete and Prime are the only carriers paying above that for dry van that I'm aware. There may be a few others.
    The fact you want to be a rider will definitely limit your options. Also you're heading into a slow freight season after the holidays. Very possible your husband won't be getting a lot of miles. You'll be doing alot of sitting at truck stops. If you're only relying on his income, I hope you have ZERO bills, other than paying for your food and cell phones. Food on the road is very expensive. Earnings are very low your first year, unless you get into tanker or flatbed. He's looking at earnings take-home in the $250-500 a week average as a first year driver.

    If you are relying 100% on the income your husband will be making honestly its gonna be tough with being a dry van OTR driver with SNI. His DBL (think of them as a dispatcher, for now) will make it or break it for him. It's a total coin toss as to whether he'll get a good one. Can you handle the possibility of having to stretch a $400-$500 paycheck through the week? Just something to seriously consider. SNI is a good place to get a start with but in ya'lls situation I think it would make things pretty rough.

    I have heard lots of good things about the SNI Bulk division, whether or not there are positions available in your area I don't know.
