I've thrown more straps than 99% of the drivers on the road due to my job and I can tell you the right way to throw them is exactly as you are. The strap should be rolled up with the print visible, hold the hook end where it feels comfortable and throw it over and if done right the strap should stay flat all the way across. Hooking first isn't a big deal but your not going to be as accurate and if the load is tall and especially on windy days your going to come up short on the other side and restart.

Of course the older guys/women are going to have to sling them with the print not visible rolled but if it works for you it works but NEVER throw the hook end over first because I've seen fork lift's glass shattered, people nearly beamed and hub's broken.

Another driver showed me the sling method once, and I've never looked back. If you whip it hard it will make it over, even tall loads. Now the wind will mess up any method, so on those days I'll park with it in mind.

Pull out a three foot length dropping the hook, then pull back enough to make a loop with the rest of the roll inside and drop the roll holding the loop. Using the loop as a sling, whip the roll over the load. It is less wear on the shoulder joint too!

Search youtube for a better look.
