They should check their stats vs. the pecentages of smokers. drivers and dockworkers are more likely to smoke thus tipping the stats.

yup, couldn't have anything to do with hitting the truckstop slop troth, er... I mean buffet, sitting on your butt 20 hours a day, smoking like a steam locomotive and riving in rush hour traffic in chicago

The article also said "While the study singles out diesel soot and other breathable exhaust particles as suspect, it did not examine individual exposures to the exhaust or workers' lifestyles and diet, which also could explain the higher incidence of heart attacks and lung cancer."

Here is another waste of taxpayer's money. Diesel fumes are the least of the truck drivers health concerns. If they want to spend their money wisely, then as MedicineMan says, look at the truckers lifestyle. Put funding towards trucker health education and healthier menu options in truck stops.

No matter where I go in this country I'm breathing unhealthy air. Truck or no t:biggrin_25523:ruck.

I don't think I'd call it exactly a waste - and while the money probably IS federal, it might not be. Could be commissioned by a hospital.. think tank.. or heck, JB Hunt. From the wording of the findings, I'm inclined to think it was some green organization trying to 'improve' our lives at the expense of our livelihoods

The bright point here, though, is that somebody is actually taking a look at the truck drivers as a whole - not this little group and that little clique... and they're looking at a serious problem. No, they haven't found the root cause yet, but they acknowledge that there IS a problem. That's the first step.

I agree, by the way - I think 'tis far less likely to be exhaust than roving couch potato with high stress levels (imagine all the stereotypical couch potatoes all watching the superbowl for 15 hours of every day).

Can you see Flying J adding an aerobics and weight room to each facility?

I believe diesel exhaust leads to an increased chance of Parkinson's Disease. I have known at least five old timer drivers to die from it, including my dad.

If you know any old timers, 70+ age, who have driven for many years, see if they are showing signs.

The trucks in the old days were very bad for exhaust fumes to come into. In a cabover you are right on top of the exhaust, and they all had a built in leak at the shift tower hole in the floor.

I have gotten up many a morning after idleing all night to smell exhaust. The fumes are especially bad when first taking off while all of the raw fuel that dumped into the exhaust pipes is burning out.

I do agree that environmental hazards have a definite affect on our health. Recirculation systems in office buildings and airplanes. Factories in your neighborhood. Diesel fumes in a concentrated truck stop. Just wash the siding on your house once a year and see what runs off.

70% of our diseases today are related to poor diet. We are literally gorging ourselves to malnutrition. When our body doesn't have the nutrition it needs, it can't defend itself against harmful environmental conditions.

Scientific studies have shown when people take Omega-3 supplements,it has:
Helped to stabilize cholesterol levels and blood pressure.
    Relieve asthma.
    Reduce heart stress.
Increase stamina and quicken reaction time.
Eliminate buildup of plaque in the arteries.
    Increase tissue elasticity.
Help lubricate the joints to relieve the pain of arthritis.
Increase blood flow to reduce the pain of headaches or migraines.
Normalize cholesterol, triglyceride levels, and blood pressure.

Taking a good multivitamin has shown to:
    Slow the aging process
    Reduce fatigue and depression
    Promote energy and well-being
Increase one’s resistance to stress and disease
    Prevent anemia

All we have to do really is concentrate on eating a healthy diet, take supplements where our diet lacks, and walk the dog or ride a bike every day.

Our problem is we are too busy living life to worry about what life is doing to us.:biggrin_25525:
