Procedure for Buying DEF at the pump

Hopefully they get it sorted soon.

Many of the TA locations have different methods for getting DEF and it can be frustrating. Sometimes it will ask on the screen and then you get to guess which one to pump first Fuel or DEF. Pumping fuel first is most common but some TA locations want you to pump the DEF first and will finish the transaction when you hang up the fuel nozzle so you can't pump DEF without starting over again. If there isn't a DEF selection on the screen then select that you want additional products and hit the call button after your finished fueling and ask for DEF.

It's hard to see what pumps have DEF when it's busy, have fun.

 

IOW, they're not interested in doing it.

 

Ive never paid attention--since I dont use it--but other day I was fueling and the guy next to me had to get it at pump--and the procedure was absurd--So I am wondering if this is normal?
he had to get all his reg fuel FIRST then the DEF--which would not have been such a big deal--EXCEPT--he had to pull up get his reefer fuel--then back up and get the DEF for his truck--I dont think I need to go into an explanation of the fluster cluck that caused a busy metro area fuel stop at 6pm

Yup, DEF is at the end of the fueling process. Since I only have to get DEF about once a week (and it's on the wrong #### side of the truck) I plan ahead and make sure I don't have to fuel the reefer at the same time. He also could have told the driver behind him what he was going to do so that driver didn't pull up when he pulled up to fuel the reefer. Hopefully he learned something that day.

 

Why I always try to fill up my DEF at PFJ. Their process is much more streamlined than TA/Petro. Tractor, DEF, Reefer, done.

 

Think when they first came out with it there were some Tanks on the Right Side.
I think by now most of the newer models should be on the left.

They must've changed it at the PFJ's in the last few months I guess. I'll admit that it's been quite a while since I've had to hit a PFJ for fuel, let alone DEF, since my directed fuel stops have been T/A and Love's heavy for a long time. In addition I've been at the terminal more often in the last few months and been able to top up DEF there. But it wasn't that long ago, the weather had turned cooler for sure, when I was at the PFJ at the 107 on I80 in Nebraska when the guy in front had to play that fill fuel and reefer then back up bit. It was memorable because he came back and told me what he was going to do.

Of course still doesn't help me much since if I'm doing DEF I'll be facing the wrong way for reefer

 

*shrug*, I've been in a DEF truck for 2+ years now and I've never been to a PFJ that you didn't fill the DEF before pulling up to fill the reefer. Defintely not a recent change.

I cringe every time I see a KW w/ the DEF cap on the pas. side. That's a whole nother level of PITA.

 

I asked the Pete dealer about the DEF being on the passenger side and was told it's an option when the truck is ordered. I can't figure why anyone would want it over there. Mine is on the driver side. To the original post, TA/Petro procedure for getting DEF, tractor and reefer is dumb at a lot of locations. It's gotten to the point where I will just go to Pilot or Loves for DEF when I'm stopping for a bathroom break. Seems like a waste of time but I've found that it is quicker than doing the pull up back up shuffle at the pumps.
