On the other hand, newer egr engines with the egr removed or disabled properly usually run great.

Yup confirms EGR is the problem, whoever thought of this regen system should be shot with balls of his own ####e!

I was talking to a friend from Ireland that has a big fleet of trucks, his new Mercedes are averaging 13.2 mpg's , his loads are very light (30,000kgs gross) but still it's good mileage, the engine in those is a Detroit without a regen system....food for thought eh?

Yup. I even cut the top off an old car stereo and blocked off the egr on my Pontiac. It seems to like it.

The cars rear ending the trucks wont worry me as much as the load shifting and parking itself over the cab.
Securing techniques and lashing points will have to be upgraded a bit.
I don't care how many chains you have on a 50 000lbs coil loaded suicide my butt would be puckered up breaking like that or I would have the door open ready to bail.

Gaah, you owned one. One day I want one or not the car but the engine, the sound that it produces is just perfect. Let's fit it in something lighter instead, like an e30 :) Got one extra in the garage almost 100% rust free that would be perfect for that v10. or maybe throw out the 2.5l bmw six I have in a boat and put a v10 there instead
Love there engines perfect design and can take a sick amount of abuse so long as they have cooling.

Brake drums provide more braking torque but the problem is they generate lots of heat and brake fades with heat. where as discs dissipate heat more quickly and save lots of weight and perform well in wet weather. as you mentioned response time. quick to replace means easy on maintenance. so disc brakes win on votes.

I do not want to say Im a perfect driver. I had in my life serious truck crash, and steering axle ABS didnt help me. The drive style and lower speed can save your life. When I see morons flying 60+ mph on icy i90 in MT I doubt ANY kind of ABS or EBD gonna help them.
